Windows 7 identifies itself as "Windows 7" when you ask for its name. It reports 6.1 as its kernel number, yes. But its name is still the string "Windows 7". If someone looks up the OS name instead of the kernel number,

The point is that checking of the OS name starts with "Windows 9" is a common thing that apps did. Its not about Microsoft logic, its about breaking existing apps. They are badly written, but the only person who will pay is the u

My impression has always been that people misuse the term live tiles to mean the general interface. While I've heard people complain about about the "live tile interface", I don't think I've actually heard a complai

Not sure why you would draw that conclusion. Do you really think people have a problem with the live tiles themselves ? That's like saying users are opposed to "icons". Live Tiles are simply icons on steroids. The Q&A so

This feels embarrassingly cringe-worthy. Did they just skip a number for no reason? What's wrong with Windows 9? Too simple?

This is only the case when you copy the fallback image--these have alt text that give you the LaTeX representation. Wikipedia sometimes gives you equations in the browser (non-fallback) and then you get unicode text similar to what klmr exp

I'm not sure I follow where this fits in here: "Windows" replaced "Windows Phone" in this example, and "Lumia" replaced "Nokia Lumia". I don't see this as representing a continued use of the

Its about Kernel and API unity and sharing components. It was clarified in an above thread that "One Windows" is an organizational statement rather than an OS flavor or even SKU.

Unifying team/platform and APIs is not the same as unifying the architecture. Windows on ARM, for instance, was previously 'unified' with Windows 8 on the x86/64. To the best of my knowledge Microsoft is referring to the

Reading this post was very uncomfortable, especially the follow-ups describing women as having "no intellectual curiosity", but also the general tone. I was also perplexed at how many others described this as an ideal life -- perh

I'm curious what the lesson here is. A lot of the changes in Python 3, such as the byte format of strings, seem to be a good thing--just something that breaks compatibility. Is the lesson never to bother fixing a major flaw in your sof

I think the author's point is that K(s) is the shortest program in _any_ language. Thus for any string s there exists a language ("silly,s") that produces the program with length 0 (or 1).

Pretty interesting reading about the MSFT-AOL interop issues. I was also under the impression Messenger was closed/proprietary, correct? As an unrelated note, this part is weird: "Microsoft’s Vista operating system, which needed t

A quote in there says that customers don't care for FIPS support. I hope OpenBSD is not planning on dropping FIPS support from LibreSSL -- it seems like that would be a huge mistake. Government agencies are among the many that are open

Not entirely fair, considering: (1) these are marked as issues that need to be fixed, and (2) many of them are related to IE implementing the CSS-grid W3C draft, vs. coming up with their own proprietary technologies. (Your comment was modif

The latest version of Microsoft's Equation Editor (and since ~07 imo) is quite good. Still a shame one needs to relearn certain symbols.

As I said in a separate comment below, I believe there is an actual hardware limitation here. According to two of the MSFT team's reddit AMA, the peripheral connector hardware did change (a few power pins were added).

Yes, Microsoft's keyboard connector changed between the Surface RT and Surface Pro to add additional pins for power. This is why Microsoft's latest Power Cover also doesn't work on the Surface RT but works on the rest. It is
