So, as a self-taught programmer I know a smattering of those things (admittedly compilers, FSM's and functional programming came from my engineering degree). The problem I have with that question (as already pointed out) is that it is phr

Hmm. I did a quick poll of the programmers I know personally & would consider successful (for a reasonable value of success). One has a firm grasp of assembly (which makes sense because he uses it a lot), a handful have a firm grasp of

More. See the reason I despise April Fools nowadays isn't because of the day itself... the problem is that the "pranks" aren't pranks any more, it is just people doing silly or stupid things for the lulz. That was a proper "prank", if a s

When he writes about this sort of thing Derren Brown (British mentalist) mentions that once you get to a decent level of skill with this you can just make up new rooms in your head; he talks about "dropping" overused rooms and starting fres

Hmm, take a careful re-read. I wouldn't (and didn't) call him insightful. Past experience of his writing screams "take care". What I did say was that in this case they are interesting, and he does have some insight into the Japanese. As I o

A meta point: Cringely is one of those bloggers who, previously, I have slated here on HN - I find his insights into technology poor, badly thought out or both. To make a bad joke; he makes me cringe. So I've been (pleasantly) surprised to

Wow, the definition of flame war there I think :S Am I missing something obvious? Is there an important reason why the FHS is considered so important and unchangeable? Or is it just political?

I never knew that.... I let http://www.startupwiki.co.uk slide because it was impossible to seed/get traction next to Crunchbase. sigh If anyone wants to collaborate on that I might be able to find the impetus to focus on it again.

Small tasks, the tutorials. All sorts of ways. But if you're learning Ruby, writing a Rails app is not necessarily a good way to start. And if you are learning Rails writing a full on project as you're introduction is going to flounder.

I tend to agree with the sentiment here; I like to play around with new ideas/stuff/software/architecture, and constantly look for way to make use of it day-to-day. But if I've decided to take on a new project it's best to default to my usu
