They probably didn't conflict at the time, see if you tell the resolver to use versions no newer than the publication date (like uv's `exclude-newer` option). I've gotten deps for older research code to install with that one

AFAIK (not much) it definitely helps to train on longer sequences even with rope/yarn and is needed if you care about long context performance (and not just the long context capability ).
