Interesting how much programmers care about the nuances of a language and don't bother to mention capabilities. GWT's main purpose is not to convert JS to a proper language, but to provide a huge set of tools, like code generation for each

It's typical of older teams or companies to fall behind and new people to outdo them. Firefox, inspired by idealism and being open source is no exception. Their code and mindset is solving old problems. Firefox didn't need standards bodies'

Amazing how groupthink works. Even people that don't work at Adobe now refuse to see the issue from the other side's perspective. This guy says that Flash performs consistently across platforms, when it doesn't. That's the main reason for t

NativeClient doesn't get access to the desktop file system just because it runs apps at desktop speeds. The sandboxing setup forces it to go through the browser to get to the filesystem. Currently interfacing with JS is the only way for NaC

I agree about the larger point that limiting the web to one language is a bad idea. There is a serious effort by Google http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1341340 to alleviate this issue. With NPAPI that allows plenty of access to the br

You can compile your binary for multiple architectures, check the type of processor and give it the appropriate binary. They also have the LLVM option so that old binaries keep working on new architectures without recompiling and rewriting

Here is a fix that could have been done long ago to reduce CPU usage http://www.kaourantin.net/2010/03/timing-it-right.html It took a lot of whining for them to get started on it, but there was and is plenty of room for improvement. The a

Since the Flash 9 release in 2006 that came with AS3 there were only minor improvements. So the rapid development of the previous years did not last. The past did not predict the future. The new 3D API is maybe a 30% improvement in performa

Flash as a CPU hog is a user complaint. Users do not care how it compares to other similar technologies and this narrow metric won’t convince any of them. This was a fixable problem that wasn’t fixed. Flash is no longer the king of easy to

Aesthetics is a silly metric. We evolved color combination reactions to find food, like fruits in a forest, or to find healthy mates. Every situation is different. A color palette like on kuler or colorlovers doesn't represent the real envi

To compete with Facebook and have a desirable product in this decade you have to go at it from another angle. It should not look and feel like a social network, friending, following should be a part of the service, not the focus. Perhaps so

Yes Ubuntu isn't going anywhere. App developers want one and only one OS and Ubuntu doesn't make life easier by being free. As far as new technologies, I imagine internet protocols and bandwidth in 2018 will make it possible to share massiv

Yea let's get an open alternative, a few years of coding, a few years of Facebook screwing up, a massive hatefest, and it will have 30% penetration in 2018. By then there will be new technologies that will make the issue irrelevant. Same as

NativeClient will support other languages and through a new plugin API, they'll be able to link up with HTML, CSS just like JS can. Only the other browsers have to agree to implement it. Minor little problem.

I thought they'd use O3D together with NativeClient which is open source. I doubt Google would bother with some proprietary plugin, their entire OS is open source. NativeClient would make plugins second nature to the web. They could be down

You're picking out silly details in the predictions. The predictions about desktops to laptops is about computers getting smaller in general, the detail about laptops was just an example, computers fitting inside jewelry is another example.
