People seem to go back and forth, I think yes it is. I sometimes think when people say social media and implicitly exclude reddit/hacker news is that it's not less identity based and more topic based.

Agreed. I've noticed instagram and reddit over the last year have really tried to squeeze the last bit of growth it can by blocking non registered visitors from using the site past a couple of clicks. I get that it's their server

A lot of what's fun about Minecraft for me is the physics and crafting. I'm not sure that translates super well to physical alone. If you're willing use your imagination for those parts, Lego does offer Minecraft sets.
