This is awesome. Presumably, at some point we'll have the process optimised to the point that it could be done in your own home, or at a local (supermarket?) level. Imagine having a kitchen appliance that produces meat from liquid feedstock

I'm not clear on why, as a rational software developer, you find this chilling. If our economic system of choice depends on there being work for everyone, our economic system will need to be changed. This can be as gradual a process as anyt

When you think of the phenomenal potential of the human mind to feel, explore and create (at whatever level the individual is capable of) the idea that most of us should spend most of our time doing things we dislike is pretty ridiculous. M

All else aside, being rude to service staff because you dislike the business they work for is utterly inexcusable.

The 'online presence' referred to includes getting started with marketing, not just creating a web page in isolation - there are tonnes of companies out there who already do that. When you're not making a huge amount per hour, but you need

It's certainly true that a fully custom solution costs more money than is available. However, there are only a finite number of custom solutions out there. Once you've built a solution for one Tai Chi instructor, a very similar solution wil

I am aware that hyperbole is the best thing in the entire world, but does the definition of 'terrible' really stretch this far? How about 'Google Calendar has some design decisions that I disagree with, mostly on the basis of some colors be

Unless you have a super-awesome job (and lots of people do), programming in your own time may be the only way to discover and play with new things. If you work backend at a C# shop but would like to start writing Ruby, you're unlikely to ge

I think it's only fair to mention that this is on my netbook - it's reasonable, but not the most powerful machine. Netflix doesn't work because of no Silverlight. Hulu and YouTube are unwatchably slow when fullscreened. They work perfectly

RVM is indeed a life-saver. I wrote a blog post documenting RVM setup on Ubuntu a while back - may be slightly out of date by now, but it's here: http://www.bootstrapp.in/39074927

I'd argue that astronomy does save lives! It does it through inspiring people to become more educated, and giving them a greater perspective on the nature of our world. Hopefully, that helps limit future conflict, warfare and environmental

I'd argue that, through failure to gain consumer traction, Microsoft just haven't been able to create the network of tightly related devices that Apple has. Thanks to their consumer focus, Apple have an entire platform sharing the same oper

Microsoft need to do more of what they did with XBox - spin off a smaller, more agile brand that doesn't invoke the image of dusty CRT monitors and lumbering corporate IT. Apple's brand identity works for selling consumer products, but nobo

The idea isn't to extrapolate predictions; it's to provide a reference to the accuracy of a person's prior assertions. For example, Gordon E. Moore would be rated pretty highly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moores_law Whereas the (Ex-)Ira
