This is no small achievement, and it's a nice article. But the word "extinction" in the original article's title is incorrect. This was a local extinction, solved in part by a captive breeding program. This is not a st

I don’t think any amount of showmanship would make Google product and service announcements as interesting and impactful as Apple’s. One problem is that Google doesn’t stick with or commit to most things, except Search and e-mail. So Google

This is a weird article that imagines that businesses skipped straight from analog -> IP. They mostly didn’t. Mid-size and larger businesses had been running digital phones and PBX systems for years and years prior to IP phones.

I think there is room in the market for repairable and non-repairable laptops, and if someone wants to sell a non-repairable one, I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s a trade off. I had an Apple MacBook Pro that lasted 7 years, and I have

It’s not just the feature that’s unsafe, it’s the feature plus the marketing. If the other manufacturers start throwing “full self-driving” around to describe their cruise control/lane keeping/automatic breaking, and people start

That’s funny. I played them both at release. I thought Fallout 1 was incredible. I remember getting the trailer literally on VHS tape and being so hyped for it, and it totally lived up to it. It was unlike anything else at the time. Fallout

Calling San Francisco a "failed city" is like calling Tesla a "failed company." It has been wildly, ridiculously successful over a short period of time (in the grand scheme of things), and has hit a recent rough spot. Th

I don't think an adapter is the kind of innovation HN users are looking for. I've fried at least one USB-C device, a high-end wireless headset, seemingly by connecting it to a name-brand USB-C charger that had some kind of incompa

It does stop innovation in things like lightning and MagSafe. And it doesn’t fix the multiple charger issue either, because so many manufacturers don’t adhere to the USB-C standard that any combination of charger + cable + device has an unr

This is meaningless without knowing the alternative. It would certainly have gone up faster with more coal-fired power plants, for example.

That is not a caste system. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caste The linked article just describes stereotypes, which are mostly easily escaped. They have little or nothing to do with birth or your ancestors.

I actually thought the 100kw number sounded awfully low. A typical wind turbine generates around 2 or 3 MW of power at capacity.

“Minuscule” or not, it doesn’t matter. Every molecule of CO2 & other greenhouse gases avoided now is worth dozens or hundreds or more that we’ll have to recapture via carbon capture in the future if we want to prevent a climate disaster

This doesn’t make sense. First, the middlemen we’re talking about are other online companies 99% of the time. Second, cutting out the middlemen reduces price pressure for both the manufacturer and the consumer.
