16bit Windows software will not work natively on 64bit Windows. However this isn't a recent change, this is happening since the introduction of 64bit Windows and consumers started getting 64bit Windows already for more than a decade ag

I'm not sure what you have in mind... generally speaking Windows software keeps working. PCs aren't speeding up much anymore, but what functionality is lost? I can still run (and i do run) software from the mid and late 90s on the

These lists are a nice idea, but i do not like the execution - they are little more than a dump of someone's bookmarks. Personally i'd like to see a bit more information about each entry, including screenshots and a short explanat

Yeah, actually the other day i was thinking about getting a 2990WX to try writing a software renderer on it and see how it performs. Too bad it is way too expensive (and Zen 2 CPUs are around the corner).

Most likely. For example, this: > passing in a member of a record rather than a pointer to that record... No idea why ...sounds like a difference in how the Windows API was exposed. In Delphi and Free Pascal there are two ways to expose

The two main issues that GLQuake has over software one are that the textures are squashed down to the nearest power-of-two and lightmaps are clamped in the "0..100%" range whereas the software rasterizer has a (sort of) "0..2

The only success the drivers had were the lock-in they created to the hardware with Glide, which itself was a thin layer on the underlying hardware. Many games used Direct3D or OpenGL without Glide support and worked just fine. Hell, Quake

Yes, that is how it usually goes, you exchange code performance for compiling performance but my point (a couple messages above) is that most of the time this performance is perfectly fine and it is only a tiny part of the codebase that may

Note that some games on Steam are DRM free, you can download the game via Steam and then make a zip with the files for your own safekeeping. Sadly it isn't obvious (nor mentioned anywhere, except some very incomplete lists in various w

I'd say most people, by far, are perfectly fine with -O1 performance. -O2 (and higher) is only needed for very small and specific parts of a codebase (e.g. the inner parts of encoding and rendering). The problem is having both at the s

It is still technically more advanced and looks better than the vast majority of indie games and my point was that if something like Doom 3 (or Rage) can be made using OpenGL 1.5+exts (or OpenGL 2.0+exts, for Rage) then OpenGL 4.1+exts that

Delphi comes with the full RTL and VCL source code. You don't get the source for the compiler, but this is useless for anyone than a 0.0000001% of the people who use GCC or Clang. Also all the tools you mentioned were incredibly produc
