That's a myth. Consider the Clackamas Town Center shooting: Nick Meli had a concealed carry permit and was carrying a weapon, although he correctly didn't take a shot. We could argue about whether or not the shooter saw Meli and committed s

That's an encouraging review. I am not a backer, because I'm cynical, but that's quite promising. This paragraph got me thinking: "I can't point to a single game that would make one need to buy a system at launch. Much of the value of the O

Interviewers know that one, although I think the right answer is pretty close to what you suggest. I recommend identifying a real weakness and then talking about how you're working to overcome it. Maybe divide the answer into two parts: wha

I see two reasons for that. First, the GOP candidates are all further from the political mainstream than the Democratic candidates. I'm not criticizing any of them or their politics, but they're very unlikely to get elected -- Scott Brown w

I'm guessing that's 30 days total PTO. Something like: 10 vacation days 10 holidays (Christmas, etc.) 5 sick days That's 25 days; 30 is a bit more than usual but I'd believe it. Now, if that's what he means by 30 PTO days, I'm dubious about

That's fair! In my talk at the last GDC Online, I called for technical operations groups to engage QA in testing their tools: puppet manifests, cobbler installations, whatever. If I thought everyone was doing it I would have left that slide

The real-world case for this is EVE Online, which has a fair amount of trouble handling 10K spaceships in a single battle. If I'm ever working on an MMO again I'm going to want to take a hard look at this tech. Some MMOs wouldn't benefit fr

I completely believe this story, because I've done similar stuff. In 1998 I was working for a company that was using a lot more incoming bandwidth than outgoing bandwidth, which is the reverse of the usual pattern. So when we outgrew our da

Heh. Everyone did that at the time, because the colos didn't know better. I had a small 300ish installation in a tier 1 provider in the Northeast, and at one point in 2004 they had to tell me they couldn't provide the power for my new racks

Single servers tend to use the total usage model. If you're buying space by the rack, you're more likely to use 95th percentile. CDNs often offer both methods and let you sort out which is better.

Disruptive technologies will have disadvantages (assuming it's a disruption from the bottom) but they need to have practical advantages too. "Living the future now" is cool -- I buy tech based on that -- but it's not a practical advantage.

This is incorrect. For example, "Our Model S never had a chance with John Broder" is an assertion. "Vehicle logs tell true story that he didn't actually charge to max & took a long detour" is an assertion ("long detour") and one that Mu

I found that interesting in the other direction. Elon Musk originally claimed it was a "long detour." When Broder pushed back, the "long detour" claim went away; now it's just a "unplanned detour" through Manhattan.
