Possibly "open sources" should be in quotes; there's no actual code there and not a lot of detail on the software. The hardware spec has a bill of goods which includes a custom chassis and no info on how that was built. Still, it's an inter

Interesting to me because it's a reminder that monitoring in and of itself generates load. I've seen that forgotten more than once.

A lot of people replying to this are talking about how holidays are their low period. I work in mobile; the Christmas holiday is the busiest time of the year for us because that's when everyone gets their new devices and downloads apps and

IMAP and CalDAV will still work, so non-Android users are not going to be left out in the cold. Contacts can be synced with CardDAV. I get occasional errors syncing with CalDAV but I haven't tried to debug them or anything so it could easil

And Apple could monopolize the areas that company wasn't good at yet, like smartphone OSes!

Nope. Apple Maps isn't particularly worse for me. The directions have been fine, and I like turn-by-turn. I miss transit directions quite a bit. I thought about what I was missing and I thought about how dominant Google is in search, and I

I use Apple products pretty much throughout my life, I didn't think the smaller screen was a big deal, and I was wrong. I've never been terribly loud about 7" devices being crappy, and I've always known Apple wasn't perfect -- they do plent

Yeah, it's a very unfortunate error. A couple of years ago, Google Maps placed Sunrise, FL in Sarasota, FL -- a 200 mile error, so somewhat larger than this one. But not as dangerous.

Duo Security has a tested module for OS X: https://www.duosecurity.com/docs/duounix This doesn't help at all for Apple ID, though.

Oh, sure. But the bigger picture -- one password/authenticator device allows access to your whole life -- still applies.

Really good point. s/Apple/everyone/, of course -- Google suffers from the same issue, but it's less worrisome thanks to two-factor.

Always cool to see how people handle automation. I wonder if they considered implementing this within another framework? Seems like this would make an excellent chef recipe.

Depends on the datacenter. Any modern datacenter won't have an issue. However, if you didn't do your research and wound up in something that wasn't built to current specs, I can easily imagine a 42U rack overloading. Similar example: there'

Great read. I disagree with him on bots, though. CCP has a highly evolved bot system which is tied into their build system, so that unit tests can include player behavior. This isn't directly relevant to load testing (although CCP does that

He did also claim that weev did the Right Thing. I don't think that assertion is clearly accurate. It's entirely possible that I'm focusing too much on motive; possibly the end effect (hole fixed) matters more than why weev did it in the fi

It's debatable whether or not they did the right thing. Many security researchers would say that the right thing would have been telling AT&T first, giving AT&T a reasonable amount of time to respond, and only then going to the medi

Point of information: did weev or anyone at Goatse Security report the hole to AT&T, or did they just send the information to the media? None of the reporting I read at the time said that they reported to AT&T, but I could easily ha
