Fair enough - but you'd need a charging station at your destination to make the OP's argument work, because if you charge your car at home every night like your phone, you're on the hook for the electricity (which probably costs more per mi

What got me is a charge rate of "150 miles of drive time in an hour" - so it takes an hour to charge for every 2.5 hours of driving?

Agreed. It just takes time to explain how any computer system works (at least at a high level). One of my friends asked me once "what is code?" after I came home from work - I spent two hours talking with him, and at the end he had a rudime

Agreed, but it's likely more useful for Markdown sources - when I was writing my thesis my supervisor and I kept the LaTeX source in a shared git repository, and added a couple macros for comments - it wasn't quite this slick, but combined

If you're looking for something a little less nerdy than some of those suggestions, why not names of streets or neighbourhoods in your city? The main key is that you want a theme with some headroom (you don't want to run out of names at fiv

I name all my computers after Tolkien characters, I have a friend who names all of his after breakfast foods, my alma mater named their servers after Norse gods, all the computers where my wife worked were named after sci-fi starships. If y

The article makes sense - the only thing I'd add is "go to sleep at a consistent time at night, and you'll wake up at a consistent time in the morning" (also, avoid caffeine, it throws your sleep schedule off like mad)

Kids tend to compare grades anyway, though - they want to have a rough idea where they fell on the curve, if they beat "the smart kid", etc.

Perhaps the newsfeed isn't useful, but Facebook has largely replaced email for personal communication for me - you know people actually check their Facebook inbox, as opposed to their 3/6/more email inboxes, and you can easily set up mailin

I meant that the users that currently upgrade every 6 months would move over to the rolling release system. Also, I don't think LTS would have to be completely separate from the rolling release. IIRC Debian stable is basically just a freeze

I think it's a win, as long as they make rolling releases between LTS releases optional. That way the LTS users keep their current status quo, and the 6-month release users get a more even distribution of new features and OS updates (they c

To provide a more concrete objection, I'll say that a human-level AI would have to have a general and expandable framework for learning , and I don't think we really have any idea how to build one. Watson is cool and all (and probably the

The hardware may be exponentially better, faster, stronger, but you've still got the same people writing the software. I don't buy the whole "Moore's Law will give us strong AI." - it just feels a bit like Asimov-era sci-fi with "nuclear po

Yes, there's lots of great math in programming languages research (it's my field, and I quite enjoy it), but I think the point was that it's only being used to solve "our" problems, not the domain problems that people fund CS to solve.
