I totally agree. I'm not a Gruber fan and I've never owned a Mac, but I was still interested in his analysis of why they held the meetings in the fashion they did. Letting us in on some of Apple's inner workings and their collective "though

Part of the reason that Python has no canonical package management is that it is rooted in Linux, where the distro is perfectly capable of handling the task of package installation. It's an unfortunate artifact of shitty software management

Don't forget Studio 35 just northeast of campus, where they have a HUGE beer selection, a great staff, and monthly productions/showings of Rocky Horror Picture Show.

This is the first rational explanation I've seen for this, so I voted it up. I'd be interested in hearing alternative solutions, if only for your sake :).

Managing DNS completely separately is fine, too. I just don't think it's a particularly good idea to use your registrar as your DNS provider unless you're also using it for hosting. I'd much rather point my registrar at my host's DNS than t

Why do people equate registrars with DNS? Wherever you're hosting your site is where you should be handling DNS.

You don't have to wait until they expire! Transferring adds another year to your current registration, and you don't lose anything at all, unless you bought hosting at GoDaddy. For basic website hosting, I've been very happy with HostGator.

The aspect of profit that is potentially bad is the maximization part. Based on the cost of the machine and some kind of statistical model, let's say that we determine that the inventor can make the most money (per time worked) if he sells

You need to divide $91,250 by 8 (=$11,406.25), because the napkins are typically sold for $0.25 for 8 of them. Then, subtract out the costs of energy and raw materials and divide the result by 4 (the number of people it takes to work the ma

I forgot about sshfs! I don't seem to use it as much anymore, but I first encountered it about 6 years ago and thought it was pretty amazing. There is a downside to sshfs, though, and it's related to the classic Joel on Software post, "The

Two points: 1. The scp command is not quite the same because it's not maintaining all the file metadata the way that tar is. 2. The examples were mostly intended to be illustrative, showing that you can do things like cd around on the remot

Thanks for the link. I've actually been pleasantly surprised by Xvnc over an "ssh -C" tunnel. Additionally, there are some parameters you can set for the vncserver (man Xvnc... one example is "-deferUpdate") that can significantly improve p

I think people are more likely downvoting because "it's PHP also" is utterly incorrect, yet stated as if it's fact. As for the UI, many HN members (including pg?) have expressed the idea that the types of people that get hung up on UI short
