I've never understood the reasoning behind this. Creativity can't be forced. The books and world are a product of GRRM's thoughts and state of mind. If you have someone else write it, or push him to hurry against his desire,

From D2 to D3 they completely tore out the Christian mythology and association with the existing legends. Things became kid-friendly. Pentagrams were changed to imprecise scribbles in circles. Angels became "angels" in name only,

I thought the videos looked corny as hell. I'm pretty sure they're going to make Diablo 4 resemble a Saturday morning cartoon, just like Diablo 3. And from the the descriptions of the mechanics, those don't seem to have impro

There's two schools of thought regarding high DPI displays, the Apple way, and the Windows way. The Apple way tries to make the DPI change transparent to the application, resizing behind the hood when necessary, and only using integer

I thought it was funny that rtings.com's live burn-in test ( https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/real-life-oled-burn-in-test ) for CNN had the "Breaking News" text clearly visible. If all news is "br

The idea behind Pulseaudio was fine, but the implementation was horrible. Lennart didn't have audio programming experience, and focused heavily on the bluetooth music streaming use case. Performance-wise it was awful, particularly for

That environment variable just was there for software to read and auto-config your card. If the jumpers were default it wasn't needed. Most programs I remember just used it as a hint. There would usually be menu settings that were the

It loses a lot of connotation, too. Philosopher's implies abstract, referring to the stone's elusive, impossible nature: having never been discovered, only theorized. In a story where everyone is a sorcerer, it dumbs that down a

It seems they are not aware that most of Huawei's contributions are board-specific to their own hardware, not code running on 99.999% of built kernels.

For the first part, look up Stacking Window Manager on Wikipedia. As for Windows XP's transparent corners, I used to make msstyle themes back in that era, so I happened to know how the theme engine works.

It's amazing how many workarounds never get removed from big codebases. For example, look at Chrome/Chromium's about:gpu page. Some driver workarounds are still applied for bug reports that haven't been looked at for a d

A snap has Ubuntu-specific package dependencies. That's totally not a cross-platform concept. The only thing snap solves is sandboxing, but there are better ways to do that.

This adds an hour more darkness in the morning. Schools start earlier than most jobs, so the kids are bearing the brunt of this. If I was a kid, I'd certainly be grumpier about waking up and less alert.

I doubt these stories. The number of people who get a smart TV and don’t connect it to the Internet are a minority. It’s just not worth the cost for any company to develop advanced features to spy on that limited subset.

The M1 Pro and Max just have more CPU and GPU cores and more RAM modules. The architecture and single-thread performance are the same. So, no, if you don’t need more cores or GPU performance, it’s just as good.
