Did everyone just forget about the time they put malware in their BIOS and installed dodgy root CAs on people’s machines (Superfish)? I am surprised they have remained so prominent in security-conscious organisations since.

I suppose this is where the notion of "once you've put something on the internet you can never delete it" comes from. If you don't want people to download your private medical records, don't leave them lying around

This is a great feature! The company I work for has spent a lot of money trying to use Snyk for this purpose, but it really sucks, and chokes on most of our Go repos go.mod files meaning some of our most important repositories are blind for

I don't think this is necessarily exclusive to Serverless, rather any event-driven architecture. I work with a mostly event-driven (via GCP Pub/Sub) microservices backend, and adopting statelessness and idempotency where possible

IIRC adding ships and planes to the mix likely won’t make a big difference to the home/land user as they are geographically far apart. The bottleneck is the bandwidth/users a single satellite can serve at any given time, as a sing

It would be nice if someone created a typescript for python. Something that allows us to wrangle control and sanity over reams of legacy untyped python madness.

It’s kind of incredible, Skype had a 10 year head-start and still lost. But really, much of Teams was built upon Skype, and that is the dominant market player by a long shot.

Zoom actually has in-browser WebRTC support, but they make such a concerted effort to hide this option. I can only assume they have some kind of incentive for wanting people to install a client on their machine. Tracking, analytics, metadat

Does it matter? When the EU adopted GDPR the rest of the tech industry had to follow. If we introduce carbon levies then processes will improve everywhere. It’s more economic to run one carbon efficient production line for everyone than an

Honestly, the fact SSDs represent 2% of the USA’s light vehicle emissions is surprisingly high.

If your tests ran in a sandbox, for instance the Bazel sandbox or a Docker container, and this has the same configuration on CI and on the local machine, then it does not matter if the tests ran in CI or on a developer's machine. This

Sure, but that only works if you’re modifying an existing piece of infrastructure. If I’m creating a new cloud function they have no idea if it’s getting invoked once per week or once per second.

This is cool, but if you extensively use cloud-native components where the bare metal is abstracted from you (eg: noSQL databases, pubsub, storage buckets, cloud functions, etc) it's very rare you're paying a fixed sum, compared t

An interesting problem. I work at a much smaller tech company with perhaps 50 people commuting to a monorepo where we also use merge trains. I always thought such an approach wouldn’t have been possible on Uber’s scale. We have a similar pr

I find a hybrid approach works well in these cases. Most of the time when I am cycling in a straight line where risk is low I stick to the side of the lane to allow cars to more easily overtake me, but at points where it is particularly ris

Perhaps unpopular opinion but I think HS2 is the correct option. Firstly, more capacity is needed on the rail network and this is a key arterial route that is already running at/over capacity. Secondly, it'll allow freight to be a

This is exactly what I needed. However, the tooling around IDEs and the go packages driver still isn't up to scratch. For example, I can't get code lens to use Bazel for testing individual functions. I think I agree that Bazel is

I don't really understand how this approach would work well with IDEs/autocompletion though. For example, suppose I'm writing some mocked unit tests in Go and want to use mockgen to generate some mocks on an interface...

I had a lot of success using FastSpeech2 + MB MelGAN via TensorFlowTTS: https://github.com/TensorSpeech/TensorFlowTTS . There are demos for iOS and Android which will allow you to run pretty convincing, modern TTS model
