These kinds of findings worry me. Given that self-control is such a major determinant in a persons quality of life, research coming out and suggesting this is not so easily taught, is bad news for the population at large. It is good news fo

It has not been dismissed. That's the trap of headline reporting. The study is suggesting influences between 50 and 75% genetic, after what looks like they remove common environmental influences. The common influences thing is mentione

This reminds me of a scheme that power retailers attempted a couple of years ago. It was essentially the same thing, they put solar panels on your roof, and they pay you a royalty. I don't think it was a particularly popular scheme. So

Sure, but I don't think the article really communicates the nuances of this very well. I imagine the article would be a lot longer if you hoped to communicate the details to an audience outside of China

I imagine this is a symptom of their parallelism. Sort of like the app engine datastore being eventually consistent, they operate optimistically. Presumably this reduces their costs and increases responsiveness. As for gmail, I noticed, whe

This is like hunting mosquitoes. You get a couple, turn the lights off, then lie down. Only to hear yet more mosquitoes.

I would have thought a lower frequency of posting would be an indication of a greater weighting of the content when something was posted. Of course, as far as keeping eyeballs for a long time, that's not what keeps people on the feed.

I think this is already well understood. The problem is, there's nothing we can do to determine what this place is. The alternative is to change nothing and stop progress. If we end up killing ourselves as a species, so be it. I would

Perhaps cheaper and more widespread gene sequencing should be considered before pursuing something which could affect entire populations of X species. I can imagine something like this wiping out some kind of pollinating insect, for example

Water security is an issue everywhere. Here in Australia, we have the Murray river. It is a major lifeline to Adelaide. However upstream farmers have been identified as stealing water, and their parent states aren't doing anything abou

Now that we're coming back up the other side of the uncanny valley, we might still see a diminishing of human actors. Given that VR/AR is supposed to be about immersion, it is going to be hard for human actors to provide this.

Looks basically like black swan theory. Looking for explanations as if someone could have seen this coming.
