To me this sounds like an adaption for responding to hostile situations at an early age. Suppose for a moment that we already have a longer (10 years to even reach puberty) development period for the exact reason of needing more processing capacity. It doesn't seem a stretch to me to think that being self aware later occurs because there is more groundwork development to occur for our complex reasoning.
