Matrix literally aims to be the missing communication layer of the Web. Just as the Web won without a single app with a single brand for people to remember, Matrix will eventually succeed too.

Matrix is a protocol, not an app, and it's still evolving rapidly. Meanwhile, Element as an app is also evolving rapidly too. Totally agreed that the onboarding has been awful in the past, but we're plugging away improving it and

fwiw, the ripping-apart here consisted of some legit implementation vulns in the ~8 year old first-gen clients (which were fixed prior to disclosure, obviously) - and one protocol question: should you warn users if a malicious server adds u

On the Matrix side, we explicitly didn't forklift the same library - we wrote our own cleanroom implementation from scratch, first in C/C++ as https://gitlab.matrix.org/matrix-org/olm and then in rust as htt

Rooms in Matrix are hosted on every server who participates in them - just because the alias is #somewhere:matrix.org doesn’t mean that if matrix.org goes down the room disappears. However, user accounts aren’t portable yet, sadly. So the p

It seems like the original post may be just a little biased against Matrix in favour of XMPP ;) Matrix has been going strong for 10 years, and while it's true that the Matrix.org Foundation (and Element) need funding (c.f. https:/

Yup - XMPP clearly has a lot of public sector traction too (e.g. in NATO's Federated Mission Networking), and each protocol has its merits. I was just trying to explain that the current "how can Governments better fund Matrix"
