Element X is not finished or intended for average users yet, as https://element.io/labs/element-x makes clear. It’s a preview of the future of Element.

Speaking as project lead for Matrix, I agree that Matrix clients tend not to be as polished as Discord - we are not blind to usability problems. However, it’s not that clearcut - for instance, Element has a full product design team (albeit

i assume it didn’t. unfortunately, decentralised web projects don’t always do that well at having each others’ backs. (Matrix maintains a presence on Bluesky tho: https://bsky.app/profile/matrix.org )

Unfortunately they declared they didn't have moderation bandwidth to maintain it as an official channel, and then apparently moved to Discord :(

P2P Matrix ( https://arewep2pyet.com ) is our answer to peer-first community software, but it's currently on hiatus thanks to funding issues. The best I can propose is normal Matrix - and then when P2P comes along, it'll

Matrix itself is a big messy thing, much like the Web - this is both its power and a potential weakness. Element X is indeed a fancy new client - but it hasn't hit a 1.0 yet. Think of it a lot like Firefox was pre-1.0; it's unrec

On Matrix, that assumes the attacker knows where the server is or that it even exists. Whereas on Signal it’s pretty obvious where the server is, given there’s only one logical server.

There’s a bunch more concrete details on this at https://fosdem.org/2024/schedule/event/fosdem-2024-3345-open... - the March 2022 blog post is a little stale now :)

honestly the next gen of matrix clients built on matrix-rust-sdk should all qualify for this - whether Element X on iOS/macOS or Android, or Fractal on GTK, or iamb for TUI with vim bindings (or weechat-matrix-rs when it’s ready). nary

mm, right. crypto is indeed WASM - either libolm (which is only 150KB of WASM) or vodozemac (our new rust impl, which is 5.5MB of WASM unstripped). Neither use much heap though - probably only a few 100KB. The main heap management trick fo

agreed that Element Web is clunky, although we’re working on it. Perhaps try https://github.com/ulyssa/iamb or weechat-matrix for your TUI? Or if on macOS, Element X is a pleasure to use as a truly native GUI client.

i’d have been in danger of agreeing a year ago, but thankfully we proved otherwise with Element X: https://element.io/labs/element-x . Bit embarassing that we didn’t get there sooner, but human fallibility and all that.

I would love both BlueSky & Matrix (and/or Element) to be given hoards of money and for us to race each other to the best federation imaginable (and then bridge it all together and live happily ever after)

I agree (as project lead for Matrix) that we've ended up going much slower than I'd have hoped. The sibling probably has it right that we bit off more than we could chew. However, we've kept doggedly chewing, and after hitt
