"We buy cars and go to mechanics, right? We don't know how to peek inside the engines anymore." I don't know which world you live in, but it sure isn't mine! Even at the height of working as a senior system engineer

This is a good overview of how it all works. On some systems like AmigaOS, there is no libc at all, for example standard input / output is handled by the dos.library in ROM. compiler-specific implementation is delivered as libc.a, whic

I'm a sarcastic person, it's a personality trait and that should not be punished or judged because it's now trendy to do so.

That's in the U.S., but we are discussing Switzerland, not the U.S. here, and in Switzerland, the taxes private car owners pay generate huge surpluses which are then embezzled by the federal government to plug up budget holes elsewhere

There are a lot of people who never managed to learn and understand Solaris more than superficially and then didn't keep up with his quite revolutionary and violent improvement, so quite often you'll read deeply wrong and misinfor

I loved using it and porting software to it. It was really cool to make such a fast yet exotic OS and CPU (PA-RISC) usable and comfortable. Really cool OS. Excellent, high quality hardware.

I ran HP-UX at home for a very long time. Loved the OS and that it's SVR4, but if one didn't have connections to get the special media, one lacked software mirroring and the compilers, which made running HP-UX a non-starter after

That's fine, SVR4 tools were always superior anyway. I could never get used to GNU.

The main point of contention with SMF was the dismal lack of documentation on the XML required when it was first introduced into Solaris 10 (what we call "putback"). At the time, Sun had the inventor of XML on their payroll and su

It is shocking to me; car owners get gouged on no less than four different surcharge taxes (license plate registration renewal, road tax, vignette on top of the road tax, fuel tax)... and then public places like that gouge them on parking.

I'm wondering the same thing: a cooperative doesn't clash with capitalism, especially if it's for profit.

I'm a car enthusiast, so much so that my daily driver is a 589 HP car. I pay through the nose to own my cars, and nothing will stop me from loving them. I rode public transport for 16 years and hated it, I'll never ride it of my o

Considering all the taxes car owners pay in Switzerland, such as street tax, the vignette, fuel tax (which gets completely misappropriated, for public transportation no less, while the car owners sit in traffic jams every day), how are priv

That depends what one defines as working: one doesn't get didley squat until one sells everything one owns down to 4'000 francs. Only then does one qualify. Low income families get medical insurance help, but they still have to pa

If you're bringing business to the grocery store, it shouldn't try to gouge you extra. That's over the top even for a capitalist like me.

Yes, for performance. If you need something to be fast and yet portable, Fortran is still the #1 language of choice, especially in supercomputing and finite element analysis fields.

Yes, the core of R is written in Fortran because short of writing assembler code by hand, Fortran compilers generate the fastest machine code.
