This is a perpetuated myth that is patently false: ZFS loves cheap disks was the maxim when ZFS first came out, and with block checksums, explicit flush requests directly to the drive electronics, a setting for keeping redundant file copi

That there is no bit used for the sign, and so I know when the registers will overflow. A lot of the assembler code I wrote exploits this very fact, since when used cleverly it’s a performance optimization.

Mashey has a good argument, however I think that the sr overload could be solved with one sr per pipeline. For example, if the CPU is a six pipeline superscalar design, like MIPS R10000 was, implement sr0 to sr5.

You’ll never feel that penalty if you’re writing the assembler code by hand, not even on the oldest, slowest MIPS processor, and if you’re using a compiler, the compiler intrinsic has to do the same thing.

I had exactly that happen when compiling PowerDNS: the developers relied on a GCC intrinsic, so I had to embark on an epic journey of building and packaging a newer version of GCC. Just to be able to serve DNS answers. That’s just so wrong.

SIMD is processor specific, and is important only in certain scenarios. Trading portability for performance is a trade-off that most developers shouldn’t be willing to make if they are open sourcing their software, because it will prevent s

That’s a solution of last resort, when all else has failed, an act of desperation: whosoever does that is saying: “I don’t know how to express this in a generic fashion”, or “it’s too much work to do it that way and I don’t want to deal wit

Processors had these en masse (6502, Z80, MC68000) since the ‘70’s of the past century. Without those, it’s extremely difficult to implement basic arithmetic with numbers larger than what the processor’s registers support. Which contemporar

“2) Use compiler built-ins and get portability across different HW at the expense of not supporting other compilers” Writing code to two specific compilers (clang and gcc) is NOT portable code. This is absolutely unacceptable behavior.

Using compiler built-ins makes one’s code instantly unportable and is therefore unacceptable.

These are all work-arounds: the permanent fix is to expose the processor’s carry and zero flags in C.

SGI engineers designed and implemented mind-blowing stuff: inst(1M) software management subsystem is still lightyears ahead of any other, even today, and how long has IRIX been out of production? Unbelievably mind blowing engineers.

Yep, I've studied this in great detail as I was very personally affected by it: it's always the same people who were the root cause of this. Sun Microsystems was the only company which stuck to its guns and continued with UNIX,

I don't understand what that would have to do with anything, as long as you made a PSF SD-UX "gcc-runtime" fileset with libgcc_s.so.1 in it. That's what I did, worked just fine.

That was solved in the newer versions of aCC. I had no issues compiling most contemporary code all the way ‘till 2014 when I finally retired my private HP-UX server infrastructure. For particularly badly written software, there was GCC on H

Perhaps HP’s biggest sin is how they ditched their super-cool, PA-RISC high quality workstations and servers, how they charged premiums for the hardware and the software, how one couldn’t get HP-UX, its compilers or even the mirroring softw
