I've recently done a project with puppet that turned out horribly. I'll share what I discovered: * Puppet's error messages are next to useless. Sometimes it can only tell you which file had an error, and not which line number. Sometimes y

I think its unfair if you're being held without charge or trial. If you've been sentenced, it might be cruel punishment or even torture but at least you can accept your fate.

I think icegreentea might be wondering why there is outrage now, when this sort of thing has been going on for really a long time. eg. A fellow Australian (David Hicks) was held for years at Guantanamo without charge or trial. Rightly or w

Ebay is the sole reason I still use paypal as a consumer. It seems very hard or impossible to buy things on ebay without having a paypal account.

Yeah, but living within 20 metres of a hive doesn't mean anything about risk of getting stung. Bees are quite happy to fly miles to get their nectar. Most of the bees from our hive visibly flew straight up and away from our area. Since ge

We had to get rid of our hive from our back yard due to neighbour complaints. Many people think a bee sting is going to kill them.

So, having been through all this, do you still want to work for this company? The way you got passed off to a "marketing guy" doesn't seem right. (Name and shame!)

Actually I was only really talking about the Linux kernel itself (which is what Linus has dominion over). For just one example, look at the multi-threaded performance of the scheduler versus other kernels.

I think the main purpose of the return policy is to allow the user to see if the applications even works at all on the user's own android handset. 15 minutes is ample for that.

Ironic, given my perception of Linux as doing good things in a mediocre way...

How about PCI-DSS (as a counterpoint)?

I think the bill should specifically define the levels of security needed for various types of infrastructure, and avoid allowing a government department to be able to change it.

Still, something could be done - for example, I know that the M4 heads west out of the city, and so is subject to poor visibility during afternoon peak due to sunset.

Why are multimillion dollar bonuses accepted and standard for management but somehow shocking for engineering? I like seeing recognition that a top engineer's work could net the company many millions of dollars of revenue.

Afaik, the free version of MySQL doesn't let you do a live transaction-safe database dump of InnoDB tables. A pretty basic feature I thought, which is included in the free version of PostgreSQL.

Acer 1810TZ here. Its 11.6", 5 hours battery life, built-in 3G modem, and I popped in an Intel 80GB SSD. 4GB RAM, and it still cost less in total than the base model Air. It ran Ubuntu perfectly out of the box, including 3G modem, making

Intel's SSDs don't perform worse if you don't use TRIM. They pre-erase and move blocks of data around in background so that when you go to write there is always some space to do so. The downside is that sequential writes are bandwidth-limi

On-die DRAM cache is a solved problem (though IBM probably owns the patent). DRAM itself is not that power intensive that it would present a problem for the CPU TDP.

Intel's looking at doing this, with an interface from the southbridge and probably soon from the CPU itself. I think eventually for low-end PCs and netbooks, CPUs will just have big L3 (DRAM) caches, and flash behind that, and no system DR
