Agreed! I think this is one of the worst things a company can do. They shouldn't be able to do it without harming their reputation.

I was using it, but stopped. It mostly worked as advertised: a proxy to a true multi-master postgresql setup. If one of the masters went down, the application wouldn't even notice, and pgPool correctly handled rolling back a transaction

Its never happened to me before, but I've seen it happen. It isn't about loyalty, its about trust. Once you've quit and then flip-flopped once, the boss can't really trust you not to do it again and again. The boss wants stability.

Phase III Boss: You're fired. We just offered you more $$ temporarily so we could have time to find a replacement because we no longer trust you after you quit the first time.

Rails has always been very MySQL-centric, probably because 37S & DHH use it for Basecamp. Perhaps now that PostgreSQL v9.0 has built in master/slave replication they will finally make the switch.

My back-of-the-envelope calculations showed that a hardware-based key value store (custom chips driving DRAM plus ethernet interfaces in a 1RU chassis), would use so much less power than an average x86 server that you could charge a great p

For sure... Atom is one of Intel's most backward products, which has received the smallest investment out of nearly all of their CPU lines. They have the capability to scale it much much higher, if there's a market for it.

For what its worth, Server 10.04 boots dramatically faster than 8.04. I've been able to reboot a VM in under 10 seconds (timed from typing "reboot" to getting a login prompt again) The main reason to upgrade Server, though, is to get acces

PHK has a history of smash hits; he is responsible for much of the work on FreeBSD's container-based virtualisation (jails), modular disk device framework (Geom), & disk encryption (gbde).

1. You can kill a consumer-grade SSD surprisingly quickly if its being hammered with writes all day in a server. (Or at least, you can exceed the manufacturer's recommendations, and do you really want to do that in a server?) 2. SSD should

ps. I should add that I really don't use BSD much anymore. The reason is that ease of administration and wider driver support is more important to me than purity of development, and neatness of the user-land. For that reason I'm using Ubun

They have a different development model which is not as Linus-centric. The user-land and kernel ship together as a more tightly integrated package. In terms of performance, I found that the linux kernel is often optimised for bandwidth at t

ZFS boot support didn't really have a bearing on scaling up large FreeBSD storage servers. It is standard practice for various reasons to have a seperate RAID (or SSD) for booting large fileservers. OpenSolaris had so many restrictions on

I read that spec differently: 96MB of L4 per board (6 sockets/24 cores per board), and up to 16 boards in one machine. So the amount of cache, is vast, but not exactly shared equally between all sockets.

Not really: for example, if/else statements are not expressions whose results can be assigned to a variable like in Ruby.
