I often wonder how other projects have tackled a similar problem to one I am tackling - today's example being multi-day events on a calendar. This list will make it much easier to see projects where there might be overlap. Thanks for the

From your point of view it's a success - there's clearly interest. Put some content on the site, resubmit it. The audience is clearly there. Email me when you do and I'll be the first to upvote it.

Well why don't you make some content available and then people will see what they're signing up for. If you've already got it then this is zero effort for a higher conversion. FWIW I've flagged this because at the moment you're 'showing' H

Absolutely spot on. Although I'd say Github is fairly symbiotic with Git itself - a tech leveraged by a brilliant service which pulls in more adopters to the tech. I don't know if there's something similar with VPNs.

Delighted to see this emerge. Unsexy and brilliant. I wish I understood your market more, but my only contribution is to say that an old client called me just today asking about VPNs and I bumbled around trying to sound knowledgeable. One

So people told it as they saw it. That's the way hackers work and speak - and that sort of frankness is one of the major reasons that HN remains outstanding in terms of signal vs noise. We don't escape everything with weasel words and seco

Brilliant point. It's a case of experimenting with the balance of freedom vs regulation. Perhaps it's not vital that a hotel(or taxi) is licensed today, because we can easily see its realtime feedback from previous users. But then again,

I have to say I saw a very similar thing with people throwing cushions around on a graduate recruitment page in about 2008 - sure it was Flash, but the end result was the same.

Can anyone point me to what would be regarded as a best-practice PHP codebase? Ideally something that's testable. I used to do all my work in PHP but moved to Rails and adopted TDD/BDD. I'm just not sure how this would fit back in to the

Funny how a chain of thought goes: 1. I read a few titles and thought "Hmm, I'll go and buy a few of these on Amazon." 2. Then I thought: "I already have some of these books that I never read, I could gift them to others." 3. Perhaps I coul

After the scanning I took about 2 days to OCR everything. That was fairly mindnumbing. Then it was a case of coding up a fairly simple Rails app and parsing that content - another two days. Some thinking time in the middle - I'd say a wee

It's so hacky that it's almost certainly a competitive disadvantage. Converting to markdown is a bit of an overstatement - it only handles the limited content that I encountered in this book. - H1 heading -> ## - Strip P tags and add ne

Sadly the HTML rendering was fairly dreadful but it did at least have the images in the correct order. It retained no placement, and each page is very different in layout. My early thought was to have perhaps 4 layouts which I could manua

Buy a wreck and take it to pieces and try to understand it. Then just sell it for scrap and recoup most of your money. You could even sell the parts individually and make some profit. Then try a project car - I'm surprised more hackers a
