A commit can be seen as a changeset. A changeset can be formatted as a patch. Projects like Git and Linux take their contributions in as patches that are sent to the projects mailing list. As it is not merged in to the master tree at the ti

Sweden is a good place for speaking English, but try e.g. Japan. You won't get far with English even in IT-companies. Even in Sweden you will miss a lot of important informal discussions if you can't speak Swedish.

Does it really work to (try to) split your tasks in to 15 minutes chunks? I often feel this kind of approach just ends up consuming more of my time as I'm constantly organising and splitting my tasks instead of just doing them.

This comparison about Disney's past and future mission statements makes me genuinely sad: Disney used to have a very clear mission statement: "Make People Happy." Now their mission is "to be one of the world's leading producers and provider

A couple of years ago I was recommended to read this article as I was doubting if vim was anything for me. It convinced me to give it a try and after two weeks of learning it felt I could never go back. Since then I have vimified everythin

Please note that this does more then what the parent suggests doing by "git checkout". This destroys untracked changes and resets your current branch-pointer to <commit>, removing all the commit-history that comes after <commit&

The second comment on the target page has a nice explanation on why this weird resolution of 1366x768 is so popular. Apparently individual screens are cut from larger sheets of pixels. Using the same vertical resolution for 4:3 screens (102

I guess all of those actual vim users had a reason to encourage you to take the "extreme route" instead of the incremental one. Maybe they have never seen anyone actually succeed in getting fluent in vim by incremental learning? I know I ha

In case anyone else was wondering about the term SLAPP, from Wikipedia: "A strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP) is a lawsuit that is intended to censor, intimidate, and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a

How are you safe from CR/LF vs. CR errors in Mercurial? I'm curious, because at least Git does not protect you from CRLF-problems out of the box. All the committers must have right settings (autocrlf=input for unix and true for Windows). In

These kind of bargain sale definitions of the great word "freedom" we are having in these discussions make me feel genuinely sad. Is freedom really something that can be taken this light? Can we really compare freedom to "do what ever you l

The fundamental difference between the ones like Apple/Microsoft and RMS/FSF is that the latter don't seek to be in control in the way the former do. RMS/FSF actually oppose to the idea and instead seek to educate people for the peoples own

I think it does not have to mean "developing something hard in software", but more like "finding an unsolved problem and using software to solve it." It does not have to be hard to solve in the software side. I guess the hardest part is fin

Absolutely not, as "j" is down.. ;-) But in seriousness, although I agree about the importance of configurability, I still find that things like "j is down" and "dd deletes the current line" are an important, integral part of the vi-philoso

To be fair, the category topped by the MacBook Pro is not "gaming" but "performance and gaming". The MBP is known to be a good match for many "performance"-tasks such as video editing and graphical work.

That is a horribly limited view of innovation. Innovation is not limited to only consumer end-products but happens through the whole design-manufacture-logistics-market chain. This is where e.g. Toyota has famously excelled. There is more t

I'm not sure it would save them money. Packaging all the various stuff (in various shapes!) uniformly greatly streamlines the shipping process. It makes the stuff easier to store (in warehouses and during shipping) and handle. Bar-codes/RFI

May I add "Erlang Programming Rules and Conventions": http://www.erlang.se/doc/programming_rules.shtml Going through these might clarify for which kind of programming the language is intended in the first place. And I also recommend Logan

I think the author makes a good point that clean code makes it easier to refactor for efficiency when proven where the need is real. Going the other route (making efficient code readable) is a lot harder and tends to get often "forgotten".
