I think government incentive should focus on changing this, as I attempt to describe in https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=AYBABTME#29087565 Basically, this is somewhere I think govt. _constructive/supportive_ int

My personal opinion is that governments should provide a backstop guarantee for tenants, to bear the risk instead of forcing landlords into making cruel choices. I think it'd make sense. It's beneficial to govt. to keep people pro

Depending where you live, if you attend some landlord association meetings, or read any popular literature about real estate investing, you'll see that this is basically what happens. The common advice is to try to bring your units hig

The problem is that the increased risk profile is indeed taken into account by landlords... it makes them retreat higher up market, depleting affordable housing supplies.

Sure, but I think this sort of grandstanding doesn't serve the conversation well. We're talking about realistic, incremental policy changes here. The kind of stuff that hopefully solves the problem at hand while limiting the blast

I think the main issue is not whether "good" landlords are affected, but the impact it has on the market. If renting to regular people is a huge liability, the smart landlords will prefer keeping units vacant or bring them up high

If from the Coinbase IPO, you just got out of lockout and you're new to that amount of money. You're probably still near 100% invested in Coinbase and need to divest into something more diversified and less volatile than Coinbase

Not sure how it is today, but I felt DigitalOcean had the right mix pre-pandemic: 50% onsite and 50% remote. We could choose which we wanted as time went, and remotes could fly in and work from the office about once per quarter. This allowe

I'm not super versed in Rust and the readme didn't seem to mention: can this be used as a pure library/package, i.e embedded in a Rust host program and used to execute arbitrary code in isolation?

The trick is to enter bash from fish, run your command, and then call fish again. (fish)$ bash (fish>bash)$ source ./random.sh (fish>bash)$ fish (fish>bash>fish)$

It's the same idea as designing hardware for repairability. Sure you can repair something that's welded on, but it's much easier if it's bolted through instead.

Advice on legitimately adding this to your house in a DIY manner? Or is it the kind of stuff you 100% need to hire licensed folks for legal reasons? I built offgrid systems for boats but now I'm considering doing my house.

I'm always shocked seeing how little money an individual (private person or even politicians!) will require to be corrupted or do some awful, future hampering act. 30k$ for nuclear secrets? I've read O(100k) for corrupt high offic

Wave height/sea state is notoriously difficult to present on video in a way that renders justice. I think it's due to lack of gimbal and probably focal length vs. field of view, and lack of depth perception.

I don't _need_ screen readers in so far as I can still read with my eyes, but I can read content quite a lot faster with it, and finish reading stuff I otherwise wouldn't, using spoken text instead.
