I installed webex recently and was also surprised because I didn't even sign in to webex, I just ran it as "guest" and it still pulled across my calendar from outlook somehow.

I made sure to take the dual monitors, dock and office chair home with me when we were sent to work from home and I suspect my colleagues, who didn't do the same, regret that decision now. Seeing them hunched over their laptop screens

IE 11 is still supported by Microsoft because it is tied to Windows 10 support. If you're B2C you can probably ignore that and just not support it, but if you're B2B where you're selling not to users it's very hard to ge

Is it me or does "webcam hacking" really undersell the bug here? From the write up at https://www.ryanpickren.com/webcam-hacking , the bug chain appears to allow script execution in "arbitrary" domain co

The whole post was playing down the effects of the current pandemic on society. The whole conclusion was that "a flu won't cause [society to break down]". So yes, the poster was using flu in a diminutive sense. And yes, flu i

1. HN is not "an informed audience", it's literally the public. And it's common for software developers to mistake themselves for domain experts on any domain but they aren't. 2. It's not an informed audience i

It's not pedantic, a lot of people will die because people were saying, "It's just a flu" and not properly preparing or isolating.

What's wrong with the subscription model? Vendors get recurring money and aren't incentivized to make sweeping changes to have major releases to get more money for the same product; consumers can manage cash flow by only paying wh

Here's just one: Thatcher wasn't in power when British Rail was privatised: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privatisation_of_British_Rail It's one of the few industries she didn't privatise.

I'm not surprised, they're essentially making a statement that they'll stay open unless forced to close. I'm disappointed that it's taken weeks to get to a point of just considering forcing closed the pubs.

Yes, as someone who is isolating entirely until this is all over due to health grounds, how soon I get to go outside again (and whether I even live through this) depends largely on the efforts of others. It's frustrating that everythin

I assume the data accessed is a heavily skewed pareto distribution. Given that, it's maybe still cheaper to build their own serving / caching layer in front to save egress costs than to have constructed the whole storage solution

It's not normal in the UK at all to have that kind of check-up, especially not pre-emptive MRIs. Screen too early and often can lead to too much preventative medicine and procedures, which ironically while preventing specific things ar

That's a good observation. I think however at that point we're onto worrying about how to educate future persons or peoples unknown. Also, I'd be wary of thinking (as others down thread have done, you are not guilty of this)

Leave history to the historians! We understand nuance from the past. For example we understand that the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand didn't cause WW1, even if it directly led to it. Why worry that future historians won

On this note, I still haven't found a language that does broad refactoring as well as C# (with resharper) does. From method extraction, to module, namespace, function renaming, to adding parameters to functions, it just takes care of i

From my (admittedly limited) experience, Go has the worst story for error handling, where functions end up repeatedly checking for error return conditions from called functions. It feels trapped between "We don't want exceptions&q

You've been wooshed, the comment was a joke about computer shells like "sh". It's the top comment for me, I'm not sure if people are upvoting because they got the joke or upvoting because they missed the joke.

It may be a matter of perspective because from my point of view, the comment you have linked is the past to which I was referring: that is from 4 years ago. That may have flown by for you but is much of the time I have been visiting HN.
