I don’t think the tweet author is trying to make a point about crown-jewel FOSS like Firefox, Blender, etc.

I think the argument is that those systems DO contain significant downsides (ease of censorship, discouraging socially unacceptable viewpoints, etc) that you’d be porting to the web.

What about just requiring companies to identify paid messaging (like political ads: “Paid for by XYZ”)? Obviously this doesn’t solve any messaging coming from overseas, but it at least helps with companies with an American presence astrotur

I think it’s worth noting that that finding is not universal, and other studies do find the opposite. My brief skim through Google scholar does seem to show a fairly divided field here. http://www-2.rotman.utoronto.ca/facbio

There's a lot of room between "things that are crimes" and "things that alienate to wide swaths of the population, and therefore make you a poor choice for an ambassador".

The FSF seems to be burning goodwill at an alarming rate. Honestly, they would have been better off either taking RMS off the board for good or doing nothing at all - this back-and-forth just ensures everybody is unhappy with them (and is p

And there are lots of people who weren’t hippies who smoked marijuana. And voter intelligence tests affected people who weren’t minorities. But that doesn’t mean the laws in question were not passed with race in mind, at least for many of t

Because race is deeply entwined with culture, and culture is in everything. Every culture owns cars, but not every subculture does things with cars that require you to do most of the work yourself in your driveway. It’s like Ehrlichman’s fa

IIRC this stopped working quite a few years ago. Now it appears every device has a factory-installed key, and cut files are encrypted with that key by their cloud software. Extremely scummy stuff.

You don’t know that was the issue. There may be other (more or equally valid) scientific data that contradicts the article, or there may be flaws in the analysis. Looking at the article, is about a computer model that somebody built - these

Anecdotally, I’ve seen a large number of retail-ish early adopters jumping into NFTs on Twitter. And I can’t help but wonder if it is a true scam - you could do some massive early transactions to pump of perceived values and create get-rich

I was using the monthly cost of a 30 year mortgage. Monthly for 30 years a 500K mortgage at 6% is roughly 3K. Monthly for 30 years a 1000K mortgage at 2% is about 3.7K. So a 100% increase in sticker price with -4% interest change yields an

That really doesn't have any bearing on the point that the costs of the F-35 and M4A are dramatically different. Funding or not funding the F-35 isn't the determining factor in funding M4A.
