I used to do the same and that turned in to turning tabs in to bookmarks, then i ended up with soooo many bookmarks.. then I discovered pocket. But within a year I had so many unread items, they even informed I was in the top 3% of users...

If I remember correctly, this used to happen on historical maps too, the UK and Europe were often made larger than they actually are. It feels silly but there are manipulative reasons to do this.
