I shelled out for ScreenFlow because of the integrated editing features. It was very useful to chop out dead time. I recorded the audio separately and synched it up. As you can tell I do not exactly have a voice for radio but it came out OK

Studies have shown a correlation between the ability to delay gratification as a young child and future success in life ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_marshmallow_experiment ). Social media and video games are one of the most ingen

I'm really excited about this because it's a great idea that meets a huge need. Quick feedback: while the demo video plays, the screenshot slideshow continues. In my browser, this was just beneath the bottom left of the video and was really

They've said they'll release something "at a comparable price point" to the $15/month shared plan. Hopefully the $50/month database isn't it as that seems high for hobby projects that outgrow the small dev database.

I help run a free conference for about 1,000 people (MinneBar: http://minnestar.org/minnebar/ ) that is paid for by sponsorship (and volunteer time - the organization is a non-profit with a low budget). It gives me sympathy for paid confer

This has kind of happened in Ruby, too. Fortunately, Ruby gems are super easy to install and the standard library got some much-needed spring cleaning in 1.9. Python could use the same. There have been many times where I've wanted to do som

I appreciated reading about Avi's thought process in deciding what he wanted to do next. I'm in a similar place (minus the successful exit) and it's hard to figure out what is _worth_ working on. I'm contracting now, and it pays well and gi

For a long time, I had a deep hatred for RSpec because we used it on a project before the API stabilized (and before it was easy to maintain an environment where all developers had the same gems). We got stuck on some particular revision in

I would like to keep an open mind about this because I like the theory of decoupling. But the only thing I use mocking/stubbing for is to mock out external services that make tests unreliable and slow (like HTTP requests). Expectation based

I am glad DHH has put up this piece. This is one of my favorite topics to be contrarian about. I am a strong believer in the importance of developer testing to ensure code quality, but some people take it way too far. I gave a talk about th

I wouldn't say 12K reputation is "smallish". I have just under 6K (mainly from ruby-on-rails and google-app-engine) and according to Stack Overflow that puts me in the top 6% of users overall.

More people should do usability tests. They're easy (see Steve Krug's books on the subject), and very eye opening. If I had to pick between programmer-written tests and usability tests (if! you don't, of course) I'd pick usability tests, be

I don't think that's true. I'm fairly sure Rails developers can make more money than commoditized Java programmers. I'm a consultant so maybe it's not apples-to-apples, but my rate is higher than "software engineer (Java)" at one of those F
