This seems more like a failing of education systems/parents encouragement (and recursively on that second one, I'm not just saying blame parents). Not everyone is going to be interested in STEM, but building intuition about the wo

I was really impressed with the Dell WD19TB dock I was issued from work for COVID. I had never used a dock before, but having all my external displays (I used 2 DP, but I think it could handle 3 at once if using HDMI too), Ethernet, all the

I love Zig, and I'm looking forward to it continuing to mature. I've been waiting for a specific compiler TODO to be resolved (something like initializing union bitfields) that (at least as of 0.7.0) wasn't yet implemented, b

I very strongly disagree. Even in a physical workplace, quick text messaging has a place. Saying that the video services are more valuable than chat is comparing apples to oranges. And I don't know of a mainstream video conferencing se

Is the HN title limited by length here? I read it, and my initial reaction is "compared to what?", since it leaves out the "Compared to Natural Sunlight" part.

I'm really looking forward to Zig becoming more refined. I started writing an x86 kernel, but put that on pause because of known compiler bugs.

If old.reddit.com ever does go away, I'll stop using it. Even on a modern computer, with a decent internet connection, the "improved" one is sluggish and slow to load, almost as bad as Facebook. It's effectively the oppo

I'm looking forward to Zig getting better. I tried writing an x86 OS in it, but some 0.6.0 known compiler bugs (I think it was some union-related stuff) broke what I was trying to do. I think it's supposed to be fixed in 0.7.0, so

Part of the decision was that there aren't as many good tools available to compile/assemble/disassemble. Also, the length of some instructions depends on the current state of flags in the processor, which is a pain for disass

It's not segmented, it's banked. And due to instructions that can use far pointers, you can directly access the entire memory. The main annoying part for me is that the stack and zero page are stuck within the first bank, limiting

If you can find a suitable graphics chip, please let me know, but I've been casually looking for the past few years for a chip that can connect to a parallel bus, and output VGA and/or composite. There http://www.vlsi.f

For personal projects I prefer running things directly on my computer, but I love Overleaf for collaborating. In the last year of my undergrad, there was a big switch in my year/discipline from using Word to LaTeX.

I really wish it was common for manufacturers to fully document features like that. Even if they "DON'T USE THIS, IT WON'T DE WHAT YOU WANT, WE'RE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING YOU DO!", it might open interesting opp

What you've said makes no sense. Why shouldn't new tech be required? You're not even comparing similar science topics to modern physics. When you're pushing the boundaries of our knowledge of the universe, there's n

I'm very much in support of this. One thing I like about Zig[1] s that integers are explicitly given sizes. I've been playing recently with it, but I'm waiting for a specific "TODO" in the compiler to be fixed. [1]

Doing that would be a massive overcompensation. This virus is bad, and it's awful for the people that have it and their families, but it's not shut-down-the-world bad.

Assuming that there's even 1% as much atmosphere up there, 20km is like 200m, making some very rough assumptions that I'm not sure are substantiated. If you've got a big camera, you can make out a huge amount of detail. At 20
