Python for web development is confusing as a beginner. I would go with PHP since everything is not magic and you can see things right away.

- aikah 12y ago> PHP since everything is not magic PHP is all about magic. That's why it is popular at first place. And its popularity is an accident we'll have to live with for decades, given the amount of PHP code deployed outthere. But if you are meant to be a CS student, you need a proper multipurpose language. You can do almost anything in python, from 3D games,to complex scientific computation. PHP is merely a templating language, with enough good syntax to be bearable for advanced programmers. PHP popularity is quite unfortunate if you ask me.Not because it is easy to start with or because it's a templating language. But because it could have been way better regardless of its execution model. It could have been cleaner and more elegant if its original author had a clue about how to design languages. most of PHP syntax is due to Rasmus inability to write a sophisticated parser.
- Igglyboo 12y agoThey're majoring in CS not Web Development. PHP doesn't really do anything other than web dev which makes it a poor fit for a general purpose CS curriculum.
- donatj 12y ago> PHP doesn't really do anything other than web dev This is such a complete misconception. Command line apps written in PHP are becoming increasingly popular, not to mention the fact that PHP runs everywhere.
- shire 12y agoNo reason to down vote because I prefer PHP for web development. In python you have to learn an entire framework just to do web stuff. PHP everything is right there is that simple.
- dmritard96 12y agoyou should check out flask. there isn't much to learn to get going...http://flask.pocoo.org/ http://flask.pocoo.org/ from flask import Flask app = Flask(__name__) @app.route("/") def hello(): return "Hello World!" if __name__ == "__main__": app.run()
- shire 12y agothat would be very confusing to understand for a beginner. PHP you can write <?php echo "Hello world" ?> right in a html file and see it just by refreshing the page.
- FraaJad 12y agoIt is confusing if you don't know the difference between a page templating language and a web framework. If ease of writing "hello world" is what matters, Python: print "hello world" beats PHP: <?php echo "hello world" ?>
- danieldk 12y agoYou can do this in Python too, if you wanted to: http://modpython.org/live/mod_python-3.3.1/doc-html/pyapi-psp.html http://modpython.org/live/mod_python-3.3.1/doc-html/pyapi-ps... But it's not a very good architecture, in the meanwhile we had better approaches, such as MVC and MVVM. Anyway, CS is not web programming, but should focus on the fundamentals of computer science, for which there are far better languages than PHP.
- frozenport 12y agoIn PHP you should learn a framework to do web development. For example, my websites were a mess until I used smarty.
- cgh 12y agoWhat does a computer science curriculum have to do with web development?
