Ask HN: How can DigitalOcean not afford $50, but can afford $3M to Omarchy?
For the life of me, I don't understand how DigitalOcean can't afford a $50 a month sponsorship to GNOME and Flatpak but can afford $3M to Omarchy. [0]
Not only that, DigitalOcean cancelled their $50 a month sponsorship to GNOME and Flatpak.
To put this in perspective, it would take 5,000 years for GNOME and Flatpak to reach the $3M figure DigitalOcean has given to Omarchy.
How does this make any sense?

- db48x 14d agoIt has nothing to do with what they can afford. Just because someone can afford an expense does not mean that they are obligated to spend the money. They simply decided not to donate to GNOME any more.
- dpmartinez 13d agoThis is what is wrong with the world today.
- db48x 13d agoYou object to other people deciding how to spend their own money? In that case I object to how you’re spending your money. I now obligate you to donate $50 a month of your own money to GNOME. You can afford it, so you cannot object.
- soraminazuki 13d agoIt is perfectly reasonable to object to the social causes that large powerful companies decide to support. It's telling that a company decides to fund millions of dollars to an ideologically motivated right wing influence campaign targeting open source communities, which by the way mainly profits off other people's work, while pulling far more smaller amounts of funding from projects that do the actual work.
- db48x 13d agoYou must be one of those “useful idiots” we so often hear about. It doesn’t even matter if Omarchy was some kind of sekret “right–wing influence campaign” as you say, instead of just a Linux distrubution, because half the population of the US is right wing! It is no stain on DigitalOcean to support a cause embraced by half of the population of the country. You are just upset about it because you’re not “right wing”. You wouldn’t complain at all if they supported a left–wing influence campaign. On the contrary, you would laud them for it! And basically everything else you said was just sour grapes.
- soraminazuki 13d ago> You are just upset about it because you’re not “right wing”. Huh? Yes, I am appalled by someone who literally compared brown people to wolves that should be shot for the protection of the "human" population, which is to mean, white people. That's an ideology that neither deserves respect nor equal protection under the law. > It doesn’t even matter if Omarchy was some kind of sekret “right–wing influence campaign” as you say I didn't claim it was "sekret." On the contrary, it's playing out in the open for everyone to see. Wealthy companies and individuals are pouring obscene amounts of money into a fund centered around someone's personal dotfiles with hotkeys for launching a bunch of commercial software. DHH claims to support other projects with that money, where most of the actual work is done, but projects that have any shred of conscience are avoiding their money like the plague. In effect, it's funding projects that don't have an issue with ethnic cleansing. Digital Ocean even withdrew funding from projects that didn't take DHH money, effectively punishing them for their stance. If something quacks like a duck, it's a duck. That fund is, for all intents and purposes, a right wing influence campaign. I know you won't be changing your behavior over this, but despite your attempt at putting together a debate-me-bro response, you couldn't even resist the urge to resort to crude name-calling. And no, adding "useful" before "idiot" doesn't hide your petty emotions. It's embarrassing.
- db48x 12d agoYou display a common lack of reading comprehension. He didn’t say that immigrants should be shot, he said that immigrants whose culture is incompatible with the Danish way of life should be deported. There’s nothing racist about it; “brown” and “white” are words that you read into the text so that you could be angry.
- dpmartinez 13d agoI already donate to OSS, but I hope you're enjoying being an unpaid volunteer spokesperson for defending multi-million dollar tech companies. It is more damning that a company cannot afford $50, but you're not even getting paid for the free work for your time defending them. If that is what you choose to do, that's fine, but for people working in OSS with companies depending on their work get nothing. This is what is wrong with the world today.
- db48x 12d agoI defend their right to private property because I have the same rights to my own property. As you have to your own.
- dpmartinez 12d agoWell I hope you're not expecting a medal from your valiant and tireless defending of these corporations, the medal budget is already spent on this distro. Keep "fighting the good fight" for free I guess...
- KetoManx64 13d agoThe only thing wrong in the world is leftists believing they should be financially supported for vomiting their ideologies all over their projects. The day that GNOME goes bankrupt could not come fast enough.
- orsorna 14d agoAll signs point to these donations being strictly ideologically motivated, and not because of the alleged merits Omarchy totes. I could further argue how sad it is that efforts like these receive tons of money versus struggling FOSS projects, all for a strictly non-technical reason.
- grepex 14d agoWhat signs point to these donations being strictly ideologically motivated? It seems more like it is about Omarchy's reach. It has clout right now. All donors stand to benefit from it by supporting it. Digital ocean especially. For an OS that aims to empower users with agents, they're going to need to host their projects somewhere. Gnome has no clout. It's boring and stable. I say this as someone who loves GNOME and uses it.
- atmosx 13d agoSome data: https://distrowatch.com/dwres-mobile.php?resource=popularity https://distrowatch.com/dwres-mobile.php?resource=popularity CachyOS is No1 the last three months and is LLM friendly. Debian is the underlying OS for a bunch of distros and its more popular. The donations are 100% budy-budy and rich kids rubbing shoulders. Nothing else / more than that. That said, it’s their money. They use it as they please. At the same time, trying to see everything through capitalistic lenses is sort of myopic IMO.

- machomaster 13d ago> The donations are 100% budy-budy and rich kids rubbing shoulders. Nothing else / more than that. Means that you haven't been looking. Your 100% figure is incorrect for the mere fact of Omarchy having hundreds of ordinary people as patrons. https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/omarchy-patronage https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/omarchy-patronage
- skrtskrt 13d agoSame reason Framework donates to far-right devs. Ideological alignment.
- KetoManx64 13d ago> Ideological Alignment I too align and want to do business with people who's entire online existance is NOT centered around "Everyone who politically disagrees with me is a racist fascist and I want people to cause harm to them and I will ban them from my forums if they disagree at me at all about my politics"
- skrtskrt 13d agoSweeping Nazi shit under the rug is one thing, sending them free money is even more pathetic.
- KetoManx64 13d agoSuch a boring NPC response
- npn 13d agoPeople do love auditing everyone else’s donations.
- bigbadfeline 13d agoMoney talks louder than words. This isn't exactly a secret, is it.
- nerdyadventurer 13d agoMay be it is because of DHH. Not sure why did they canceled measly $50 for Gnome.
- soundnote 9d agoJordan Petridis of GNOME has said that people or organizations must "contain Hitler particles" to even consider donating to Omarchy or Hyprland.
