- charrondev 1mo agoI used cursor extensively both at work and for personal use. Its harness is pretty darn good but I basically never used OpenAI models in it. The first party cursor models (initially composer and now grok-cursor) and price very competitively for their quality and have very generous usage limits included in the base plans, and then per token pricing afterwards. Occasionally I’ve used some of the Anthropic models in it but found their cost massively outweighed the benefits for the type of usage we do. I was using Sonnet 4.5 and 4.6 for a while but the newer models are a lot more expensive at the per-token pricing.
- auscompgeek 1mo agoCursor does currently allow users to BYO OpenAI token. Given Cursor won't have access to OpenAI models for prompt engineering/evals though, there's definitely a question of whether they'd allow picking any new OpenAI models, assuming the BYOK option continues to exist at all.
- Maxious 1mo agoEmail to customers now "We’re speaking with the OpenAI team to resolve this, and we will share more in the coming weeks around continuity of access to OpenAI models. We’ll continue to offer ways to access all models in Cursor.
- ralusek 1mo agoIt's basically not going to affect them at all. I don't know a single person that uses OpenAI models via Cursor. Saw another comment say it was 5%.
- hirako2000 1mo agoAll it shows is that openai is likely still subsidizing inference, sees no value in integration buried within other branded tooling competing with theirs.
- therealdrag0 1mo agoI used mostly OpenAI for the last like 6 months in cursor. I got tired of how slow Claude models are and switched. I’m surprised usage is so low. Wonder why.
- npn 1mo agoBecause you can also use grok and a dozen other models. In fact grok is preferred choice for cursor right now, so obviously the other models get sidelined
- ralusek 1mo agoI didn't mean people aren't using OpenAI, I just mean not through Cursor. Using OpenAI through codex (cli) is the way you should use it.
- ncr100 1mo agoUnless those 5% are 500% more productive than the 95%
- maipen 1mo agoAccording to Cursor CEO, it only accounts for 5% usage of cursor, so it's not a big deal at all
