Not a good thing. China is an authoritarian regime, which we need to reduce dependency on, not increase it.
- matheusmoreira 2mo agoThe US is not that different.
- SanjayMehta 2mo agoThe US is infinitely worse, at least China is predictable.
- matheusmoreira 2mo agoYeah, can't say I disagree. I expected Trump to be authoritarian but I thought he'd actually at least try to be smart about it.
- OutOfHere 2mo agoYou don't know the meaning of the words. Ask the Philippines how unpredictable China is in the South China sea.
- SanjayMehta 2mo agoYou don't know who is the President of the USA.
- OutOfHere 2mo agoAnd how is that relevant? You have a bad habit of routinely making extremist statements without backing them up. It is not the first time I have seen you do it. The US is not an authoritarian regime. To call it infinitely worse than China in this regard is false, and is a laughable claim. The President will be out in a few years.
- SanjayMehta 2mo agoThis is risible: comparing unpredictability with authoritarianism. Ever heard of apples and oranges? The US is only predictable in its unnecessary belligerence. As for the president, who will be out in a few years, thank you for proving my point: the next one will be different. Unpredictable what that fellow will do. At least we know China will be authoritarian. And as for extremism, let me add the only group more extremist than the US are ISIS and their ilk: "with us or against us," killing civilians without trial (Venezuela most recently), Albright saying on TV that the deaths of "half a million children was worth it." Shouldn't even mention Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Your actions are extremist and you're offended by mere words?
- OutOfHere 2mo agoMr. Sanjay Mehta, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were absolutely necessary. It was Japan who had attacked the US first in Pearl Harbor. Japan was not willing to surrender without both of these attacks. The attack against Iran was a necessary one. Iran was responsible for many US casualties in Iraq during the US-Iraq war. It was necessary to punish Iran for these terrorist actions. Iran is a terrorist country that funds terrorism across the Middle East. Do you like terrorists? Granted, the war hasn't gone how the US anticipated, but this lesson was learned only in retrospect. > comparing unpredictability with authoritarianism. No. Please recursively scroll up to the parent comments in the thread, all the way up to the comment by BaardFigur. The thread is about authoritarianism. You don't get to revoke what it is. Now who's risible.
- SanjayMehta 2mo agoMr OutOfHere: I expected the pathetic excuse for the nuclear genocide of the two Japanese cities. The real reason was to frighten the Soviets. Not going to waste my time on this aspect any more: educating the wilfully ignorant and propagandised is not my job. The US triggered the Iraq/Iran war. Not just that, they supplied Saddam with precursors for chemical weapons. Later used the same as an excuse to depose him. Real reason for attacking every oil rich country is always oil. Speaking of authoritarianism, THIS is on HN right now: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49294199 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49294199 The real world knows exactly what the US is, thanks to President Trump's honesty in being a war criminal. Unlike the series of war criminals preceding him. Including the precious Obama.
- eunos 2mo agoChina is predictable. See how it was smoother during Du30
- LarsDu88 2mo agoChina is more authoritarian but the US under republican presidential administrations has been more more militarily aggressive. Every single Republican administration has initiated invasions of other countries and every Democratic administration has at the very least engaged with overseas bombing. The question is whether this makes folks more or less likely to hold dollars vs yuan as reserve currency
- victorbjorklund 2mo agoWe also need to reduce our depency on USA which is currently signaling it is a hostile nation that consider and invasion of Europe in the form of an occupation of Greenland. It is possible USA:a admin is just lying about their hostile intentions but that in itself is a reason to reduce dependence on America
- dana-s 2mo agoThe USA is also currently signalling hostilities towards Brazil. They're hostile to all.
- tgv 2mo ago> We also need to reduce our depency on USA True, but trading the USA for China is not a wise move, if only because China would never ever have stepped up in WW2, and will not provide any support in the future either, except --Buddha willing-- by selling arms.
- keybored 2mo agoIs choosing your favorite hegemon going to be based on WWII Hollywood stories?
- amrit3128 2mo agoBlood money isn't red in color. USA has more war crimes in the past 5 decades than almost all other major countries combined. But that doesn't matter when you're profiting. Same goes here.
- keybored 2mo agoI’m impressed. I had to scroll down ten top level comments in order to find a contentless but-China-regime comment. Good work HN.
- brodo 2mo agoI think other nations are not asking themselves which country has the best human rights record. That time has passed. Trump and Putin have pushed the world back to pure power politics. All the middle powers want to be less open to US blackmailing by diversifying. They know China is not their friend, but the US isn't either, and China is more predictable.
