- 1718627440 1y agoYou are confusing free and unrestricted markets. A free market means that reality is accurately is reflected in prices, so people can make a free and informed choice. I think free and unrestricted can't exit, but that's just my opinion.
- terminalshort 1y agoRestaurants
- n4r9 1y agoSubject to food and safety standards, environmental regulations, antitrust regulations, minimum alcohol pricing, event licencing, marketing and advertising compliance etc....
- terminalshort 1y agoRestaurants weren't a monopoly, or even close to a monopoly before any of that. Neither were most industries before any of those regulations. In fact they were less monopolistic. Excessive regulations make things more concentrated, not less, because the compliance costs are less burdensome on large companies.
- marcosdumay 1y ago"Industries" are something that only appeared after a huge popular movement that killed or threatened to kill several government heads around the world and whose one of the demands were to extinguish the monopolies.
- imtringued 1y agoI think you are mistaken about the part where they demanded to extinguish monopolies. They just wanted to replace the existing monopolies with their own favoured monopolies.
- marcosdumay 1y agoThat's bullshit. The illuminists wanted to read books without seeking permission, to be able to buy stuff from a a neighboring city, or to work on whatever they wanted.
- terminalshort 1y agoSounds like they wanted a free market
- n4r9 1y agoWhat on earth are you guys talking about? I'm googling about "illuminists" and "illuminati" and I can't find anything about monopolies or permissive bookreading.
- n4r9 1y agoWhat do you mean by "before any of that"? In the middle ages - when we had taverns and inns rather than restaurants - establishments still required a licence to operate and had to comply with standards and laws. See e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ale_Houses_Act_1551 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ale_Houses_Act_1551 . Prior to that, Anglo-Saxon kings would pass laws controlling alehouses. Prior to that, the Romans set up tabernae which would likely be regulated by their own laws.
- rini17 1y agoWhich end up being ran by mafia every time the govt stops looking.
- terminalshort 1y agoThat's not true for 99% of restaurants, and it's not a monopoly either.
- rini17 1y agoHow can you be so sure? There is plenty of research for Ndrangheta in Europe that routinely uses restaurants to not only launder money but also to cultivate relationships with locals. Which makes it so hard to prosecute. It's widespread. While technically mafia is not usually a monopoly, try moving your business to another one.
