Palestinian who helped make Oscar-winning No Other Land killed in West Bank
- nashashmi 1y ago> killed during an attack by … settlers in the south Hebron hills. Ben Gvir should be held responsible here.
- aa-jv 1y ago"Israeli settler Yinon Levi, whom Trump removed from US sanctions list, arrested after death of Awdah Hathaleen" At least there is some hope that the settlers will face justice. IMHO, this is of utmost importance to the matter of a final resolution of the calamity, and such arrests are an issue that the Palestinian people deserve - justice for the many, many crimes of the settlers. One can hope that the tide is slowly turning in this conflict. It is incumbent on we, the people of the Free World™, to keep the heat on.
- krageon 1y agoThe article mentions nobody is getting actual prosecution for doing these things, making the arrests primarily performative.
- aa-jv 1y agoThus the notion that we, the people of the Free World™, should keep the heat on this issue until it is properly resolved per the mores of our own sovereign democracies.
- alkhatib 1y ago“ He was arrested later by Israeli police for questioning, though no charges have been filed against him.”
- madaxe_again 1y agoHighly unlikely. More probable is that the military will move in and shoot them all for throwing rocks, and that Yuval Abraham will be imprisoned for distributing “terrorist propaganda”. Levi will probably be given a cash payout and sympathetic interviews on TV. Maybe a medal for bravery and a new car, too.
- aa-jv 1y agoLets see if this expansion of the atrocity you describe comes to pass. IMHO, the mere fact we are discussing this on HN, traditionally very resistant to propagating news such as this, may signal a change in tide.
- madaxe_again 1y agoOh, this story will be flagged and dead within the hour. Edit: minute. It’s gone.
- nashashmi 1y agoI don’t understand why these posts get flagged. They are relevant. They are far less flammatory due to widespread agreement than other controversial topics. They attract a small subset of trolls which is a huge problem for HN because it doesn’t have trolls. But those trolls get downvoted quickly. So the need for flagging this is less. If the title was less “Palestinian” maybe it would not be flagged. I remember when the Netflix Nachos crew member was killed in Mexico by a cartel, this was on HN.
- madaxe_again 1y agoMexico does not have a large involvement in tech investment. Israel does. The majority of Mexicans do not support the cartels. A majority of Israelis support settlers.
- samrus 1y agoIf they're targeting and killing people, then they arent really just settlers anymore, they're combatants
- aa-jv 1y agoDo you know what we call religious zealots who use their ideology to justify the wanton murder of other human beings, here in the Free World™? They're not combatants. Its the "T-word", which is pliably used in another context as just this centuries "N-word"...

- catigula 1y agoStrange, I found a lot of commentary you've made under strictly political topics without much complaint.
- SwiftyBug 1y agoWelcome to Hacker News. We talk a lot about tech stuff, but the occasional culturally-relevant news also gets to the front page.

- burnt-resistor 1y agoI was just watching Democracy Now! showing a pistol-wielding settler threatening the same group of Palestinians the day before including the latest victim, Awdah Hathaleen. Recall that Hamdan Ballal was beaten by settlers and soldiers and arrested in March of this year as well.
- rich_sasha 1y agoIt is heart-stoppingly sad how a people is getting wiped out, slowly and meticulously, and the world just says, please let us show restraint. It is a complex ethnic conflict no doubt, I am not saying it isn't. But actually the settlers in the West Bank part is kinda simpler. These people are hounded away by militias backed by their state, by guns, bulldozers and settlements. Meanwhile, Israeli human rights organisations have just called their government's actions as undeniably genocidal. I wish peace to all civilians living in that part of the world, but it feels so far away.

- sleight42 1y agoOh, look. Another post that alt-right people would hate. And it's flagged. I think I see a pattern...
