Targeting of Tufts Student for Deportation Stuns Friends and Teachers

- JumpCrisscross 2y agoThis one makes no sense. Here is the essay [1]. Not pro Hamas. Not pro 7 October. It’s barely even about the war in Gaza—more a procedural argument about the role of the student senate in college affairs. She deserves to be set free and to be able to collect damages. The officers who arrested her, meanwhile, should be investigated by Massachusetts—I doubt they had a warrant. - jmclnx 2y agoIf I was the Gov of Mass, I would have State Troopers stationed all around Tuffs and check the ICE people for a Warrant before letting them on campus. If no warrant, arrest them.
- JumpCrisscross 2y agoWould be somewhat hilarious if colleges began organising militias.

- jaybrendansmith 2y agoThis is state-sponsored terrorism against higher education, because Tufts would not fall in line like Columbia did. For all the talk of freedom and free speech, if we are no longer all equal under the law, we are no longer a free people.
- JumpCrisscross 2y ago> This is state-sponsored terrorism No, it’s not. Like, this article is Exhibit A for not labelling everything we don’t like terrorism.
- breadwinner 2y agoDisagree. Men in plain clothes ambushing a student, capturing and taking her away in an unmarked car — for the crime of writing an essay — is absolutely terrorizing. And I bet the intent of the administration is to terrorize. This is worthy of the Gestapo, not USA, the land of the free.
- JumpCrisscross 2y ago> Men in plain clothes ambushing a student, capturing and taking her away in an unmarked car — for the crime of writing an essay — is absolutely terrorizing Terrifying. Fascist. Sure. Not terrorism. Unless we’re diluting the term terrorism to the point of meaninglessness.
- colinb 2y agoI think that ship sailed so long ago it’s done a few circumnavigations already.
- breadwinner 2y agoHere's the dictionary definition of terrorism: the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. Does this apply to the current case? It seems to check every box. The actions were unlawful, since the student — even immigrant students on visas — have 1st amendment rights. Was it intimidation? It certainly was. Was it against civilians? Yes. In pursuit of political aims? Yes.
- janice1999 2y agoRelated and immediately flagged: "Hundreds of international students wake up to an email asking them to self deport for campus activism" https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/us/hundreds-of-international-students-are-waking-up-to-an-email-asking-them-to-self-deport-for-campus-activism-or-even-sharing-posts-on-social-media/articleshow/119679695.cms https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/us/hundreds-of-int...
- isthatafact 2y agoThat looks completely fake -- was it verified? The supposedly official legal order to "self deport" delivered via an email message that has every appearance of a malicious spam is rather absurd.
- breadwinner 2y agoAmerica is the leading economy in the world today not because it has the most number of people, but because it has the best and the brightest. We have the smartest people not because the smartest people of the world were all born here, but because smart people born elsewhere have been immigrating to the United States. Most immigrated on student visas. Harassing immigrant students in universities will lead to the US no longer being a seen as a great destination for the brightest minds. But forget being a leading economy, this type of attack on students — for the crime of writing an essay in a student newspaper — is morally outrageous as well. It is unamerican.
