AI system achieves 96% accuracy in determining sex from dental X-rays
- r0ze-at-hn 2y agoThis isn’t a surprise or shock. The Jaw bone development is highly influenced by sex hormone exposure. I personally look at the jaw bone (followed by the rest of the skull) before the pelvis when guessing the probable sex of a skeleton.
- nomonnai 2y agoAre you doing that in a professional capacity or is this more of a hobby?
- AvocadosNombre 2y agoDo what you love and never work a day in your life.
- poulpy123 2y agoEspecially after you get caught by the police

- Terr_ 2y agoIt strikes me that the saying can mean the person is enjoying their profession... Or that nobody else values their passions and they are very unemployed.
- pogue 2y agoLooking at skeletons for fun or profit
- shrimp_emoji 2y agoThey can also do this for retinas, which human doctors can't notice any sex differences in.
- bamboozled 2y agoUseful for terminators
- dsq 2y agoDo they have xray vision? It looked more Infra red to me.
- bamboozled 2y agoWas a Dad joke

- reaperman 2y agoNo. The comment above you is taking a jab at the concept of "there are no differences at all between men and women". It's the type of snark which isn't allowed on HN. Unless you were using the incredulous "Really?" rather than the credulous "Really?".

- vouaobrasil 2y agoEven if this is useful, it just means becoming more dependent on AI, which overrides any benefit in my opinion. Also, it seems like putting AI in a title is just a new way to get clicks.
- saikia81 2y agoThis is such a classic. Better not invent the wheel or we will despair once we forget how to use our feet.
- vouaobrasil 2y agoNot every invention is the wheel. One cannot evaluate the effects of every invention upon humanity by making analogies with the wheel. Grade school analysis.
- constantcrying 2y agoRefusing to use tools "because you become dependent" has thankfully never stopped any human invention. The use of "AI" in the title is 100% appropriate. The researchers used common machine learning approaches for the identification. Putting that into the title seems to be the opposite of click bait.
- viraptor 2y agoWe used to call it just that - ML rather then AI. It was a more appropriate name since sorting pictures is typically not much of "intelligence".
- mewpmewp2 2y agoHow is that not intelligence? Also you are fine with the word "learning", but not "intelligence". I would think that learning requires intelligence. Learning arguably is a stronger word than intelligence. Also who is "we" that "used to"? Machine learning has always been part of AI. It is a field within AI. When people call it ML it is because they are being more specific, but it has always been fine to refer to it as AI.
