Not sure why, but this page is _grindingly slow_ on Firefox. Initial load, etc. EDIT: TLS setup took 15s. Not sure whats up with that. Honeypot / content hack puzzle? EDIT^2: It took some time to load, but after watching two, my thoughts are that the deep fakes are okay -- B on a grade scale. The mouth movement has some uncanny valley but the audio is spot on. Well done.

getting linked on HN is not dissimilar from a DDOS

Remember, folks: host your static content on CDN
    - aestetix 3y ago
The reason we self hosted the videos is for fear of takedowns. Even though it was posted on April Fool's Day and they are obviously satire, some of the people targeted have very thin skin and are fond of lawsuits. Of course that was before it made the front page of hacker news :)
      - tomrod 3y ago
I'm sort of new to web content, networking, and front end. New as in I can grok dev tools but not root causes. What do you reckon was causing the TLS to take 15s?

Edit: site should be more stable now. Leaving the rest of the info in place just in case. ---- I was not expecting this to hit the front page. Site is currently experiencing the "hug of death." General information for new people: the HOPE hacker conference is this July 12-14 at St. John's University in Queens, New York City. 10% of all ticket sales for the month of April are donated to the EFF. You can buy tickets at https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv Or just be patient until the site loads and you can watch the funny videos. You can also watch the videos on the Youtube playlist at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcajvRZA8E08mP8_JddQQDZ3T25pDmXyW https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcajvRZA8E08mP8_JddQQ... Or check out @hopeconf on twitter/x, mastodon, and instagram, where the videos have been posted.

The funny videos in question are also available here (Youtube), if you don't have time to be patient. Still, buy tickets and go to HOPE! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcajvRZA8E08mP8_JddQQDZ3T25pDmXyW https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcajvRZA8E08mP8_JddQQ...

Will there be any livestreams? Have a great con!
  - aestetix 3y ago
Not only will there be livestreams, but there is a virtual ticket people can buy who can't attend in person but want to support: https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv-virtual-attendee https://store.2600.com/products/tickets-to-hope-xv-virtual-a...

Just learned about H.O.P.E. which stands for "Hackers On Planet Earth", which is ironic because their events have never left the USA since '94 when they started.
- tekla 3y ago
  How is this ironic
  - LeonB 3y ago
The implied meaning (global) is in strong contrast to the actual meaning (restricted to the USA).
    - tekla 3y ago
But that's not irony. It's also a weird thing to complain about. It happens in NYC and I know people who come internationally for HOPE. And even if they didn't, are US based attendees also not on planet earth? The things people try and fet angry about...
      - throwaway458864 3y ago
Obviously it happens on planet earth and the visitors are hackers who live on planet earth. I don't think they care particularly if it's ironic, I think they just don't like the name and are looking for something to complain about. So let them complain.
      - mdrzn 3y ago
I wasn't complaining, I just posted something I noticed considering I just learned about this organization. I went to check the tickets, then the history of the event, and noticed that it has always been held in the US. Since HN in general likes to complain about names (OpenAI? more like ClosedAI AMIRITE??) I thought this was on topic.
      - LeonB 3y ago
I’m not complaining. I’m trying to help you see why people can detect irony in the situation. I certainly was not angry about it. Please don’t respond to me further. (“Tekla” did indeed go ahead and triple down. That’s troll behaviour.)

Trivia: There are HOPE flyers in the movie “Hackers”. Cereal Killer’s real name is Emmanuel Goldstein, who is the maybe-fake reactionary leader in “1984”, and from there, the pen name of 2600 Magazine’s editor. 2600 sponsors HOPE. Also: I was able to get my work to buy me a lifetime subscription to 2600 from my personal education budget. Just in case you were looking for a way to spend yours down.

that was genuinely funny, a great marketing move
