Intel doesn't think that Arm CPUs will make a dent in the laptop market
- johnklos 3y agoYeah. Reminds me of Microsoft people saying the iPhone isn't going anywhere in 2007. I'm still running a 2010 MacBook Pro because I wasn't ever going to upgrade when the only options were still Intel. ARM just makes the most sense right now, whether running macOS or BSD. Even if I wanted or needed x86, I can't think of a single reason why I'd ever choose Intel over AMD. Intel can play their games of costing 300 watts to get a few percent higher framerates in games, but I'm more than happy to have something that's slightly slower and takes a non-trivial amount less power.
- simonblack 3y agoARM just makes the most sense right now, whether running macOS or BSD. And not just those two OSs. I current run two virtual-host websites using a Raspberry Pi (ARM-based) which is running one of the Linux distros. And the MSFT Windows 'Surface' machines run on ARM too. Intel completely lost the 8-bit market through complacence when Zilog introduced the Z80. They could very easily lose the 'PC-hardware-based' platform through complacence again too.
- MBCook 3y agoTook the words out of my mouth. One of the most famous quotes: “We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,” [Palm CEO Ed] Colligan said. “PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in.”
- simonblack 3y agoIntel doesn't (want to) think (what a financial disaster for Intel it will be when it happens) that Arm CPUs will make a dent in the laptop market. FTFY
- amacalac 3y agoReminds me of that time they thought Arm CPUs wouldn't make a dent in the server market. Cute.
- phendrenad2 3y agoAre they though?
- isodev 3y agoNot sure on a bigger scale, but ARM flavoured options have appeared in many VPS providers (e.g. Hetzner). A client of mine recently completed their transition to ARM for server components, and they seem happy.
- phendrenad2 3y agoAt the moment the entire ARM server ecosystem seems like everyone is just experimenting with it to see if there's any value there.
