Closed platforms are not and can never be "free speech zones." They answer to their owners, period.
- Natsu 3y agoWhat sort of topics are currently being censored? I haven't seen examples of things being suppressed, but that's also why I'm asking; because I wouldn't have seen things that got suppressed.
- iudqnolq 3y agoTwitter used to be the best tech company in the world at resisting government censorship. They routinely fought governments around the world in court, including in the US. Now they aren't. For example they recently did global censorship at the behest of the Indian government.
- AlexandrB 3y ago> The reason given for its account suspension, an Elm Fork John Brown Gun Club contributor told The New Republic, was that it had violated Twitter rules against “hateful conduct,” with two tweets cited: a reply to the official account of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (“Mugging at gun point,” reads the reply to an unspecified CBP post) and another post with what seems like a retort to the perpetual conservative nonjoke about pronouns, “Every queer a riflethem.” [1] https://newrepublic.com/article/169112/elon-musk-anti-trans-twitter-john-br https://newrepublic.com/article/169112/elon-musk-anti-trans-...
- orwin 3y agoErdoğan opposants accounts and tweets were blocked/suppressed a few weeks before the election (its mostly good now, most accounts are unbanned since the election is over). Also, crimethInc ban will soon have its birthday (https://fr.crimethinc.com/2022/11/25/elon-musk-bans-crimethinc-from-twitter-on-request-from-far-right-troll https://fr.crimethinc.com/2022/11/25/elon-musk-bans-crimethi...)

- threeseed 3y agoTwitter is complying with more government demands under Elon Musk. [1] Before Musk, Twitter's full compliance rate hovered around 50%; since the takeover, it is over 80%. These countries include China [2] and India [3]. [1] https://restofworld.org/2023/elon-musk-twitter-government-orders https://restofworld.org/2023/elon-musk-twitter-government-or... - badwolf 3y agoDo you live in a box? Twitter used to fight _actual_ censorship. From governments demanding things be taken down. Musk rolls over like a puppy for China, India, Turkiye, etc...

- b112 3y ago"the censorship he disliked"
- ceejayoz 3y agoHe claimed to dislike virtually all censorship. A "free speech absolutist" (https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1499976967105433600 https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1499976967105433600). That was rapidly shown not to be the case when @ElonJet got snuffed out.
- duskwuff 3y agoNot to mention that whole period where they were blocking links to Mastodon instances, Instagram, Substack, and Linktree (excuse me, "prohibited 3rd-party social media platforms"). https://www.theverge.com/2022/12/18/23515221/twitter-bans-links-instagram-mastodon-competitors https://www.theverge.com/2022/12/18/23515221/twitter-bans-li...
- artursapek 3y agoI feel like doxing peoples’ location is not acceptable free speech online, just in general
- hef19898 3y agoThere are still people who think elonsjet was doxxing? Interesting...
- welon 3y agoSuch info is published by law; public has a right to track potential debris that may rain down on it given malfeasance or technical failures Elon is free to not own private jets What’s with coddling a minority that does not care we exist?
- FireBeyond 3y agoAnd all his mealy mouthed claims about anonymity are laughable. The jet's registered owner is a company with a very Space-y name, whose address is "1 Space Drive" an address which if you put into Google will say "Businesses associated with this address: Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company". Security through obscurity, it ain't.
