Experts Say AI Girlfriend Apps Are Training Men to Be Even Worse
- asynchronous 3y agoI think we’ve officially overused the word ‘expert’ until it’s lost all meaning.
- nullindividual 3y ago> Our modern world is so alienating I think the article could have stopped there and gone into something much more informative, useful, and possibly productive (probably not).
- Gibbon1 3y agoMy opinion as a man in his 60's is were doing an inexcusably shit job of setting things up so that young men and women can meet and get to know each other.
- throwawaysleep 3y agoAre these men likely to have relationships with women later on in life? Seems like it would be best to give incels a harmless replica of what they want and keep them happy with bread and circuses (or bots in this case) so they do not cause trouble.
- ImAnAmateur 3y agoThey don't exist in a vacuum. These people know they are playing text-based game. As I see it, the danger is similar to how other kinds of fiction is erroneously seen as truthful.
- PaulHoule 3y agoWoman, as they get older, find that “good” men are hard to find, see https://www.amazon.com/Why-Love-Hurts-Sociological-Explanation/dp/0745671071 https://www.amazon.com/Why-Love-Hurts-Sociological-Explanati... the problem has a nearly straight line relationship with many men feeling shut out of dating at an earlier age, and if more men withdraw into fantasy women will only suffer for it later on.

- PoignardAzur 3y ago> and if more men withdraw into fantasy women will only suffer for it later on This almost feels like the "thousand men killed, women most affected" meme. Otherwise, yes, this is a symptom of a problem that's probably going to get worse.
- asynchronous 3y agoSo literally, the argument presented here is that we should care about not alienating men because it could harm women in the future. What a world we exist in.
- Invictus0 3y agoThe casual contempt in this comment is just stunning
- brucethemoose2 3y agoI would posit that "smarter" models like character.ai or the recent llama finetunes are potentially healthier because they are more deductive, and less submissive. They will push back. And bots like this are a good temporary resource for socially isolated people in bad situations. This is still a worrying trend though. And while people have been whining about getting "sucked into" fiction for centuries, some of the commercial bots really are dangerous because they are designed to suck you in.
- pimlottc 3y agoGiven a choice, I’m not so sure that the majority of customers in the market for an AI girlfriend want one that pushes back more. Put another way, providers will use the models that sell best, not necessarily the ones that are “smartest” or most capable.
- marcellus23 3y ago"even worse"? Phrasing like that has always made me uncomfortable, like you're born with some sort of original sin by being a man. As if men are just inherently bad people. Not the kind of stuff I would want my son to grow up reading.
- asynchronous 3y agoI got bad news about the world you’re going to raise your son in.
- deprecative 3y agoThis is how society views us whether we like it or not. We're seen as evil, vile, perverts who prey on women and children. It's not true but that's what we're viewed as.
- falcolas 3y agoThe real problem is that it is true for a vanishingly small minority of males. But that vanishingly small minority does enough "evil, vile, and perverted" activities to train women (and some men) to be afraid of males in general. Because outwardly there's no sign people wear that separates the men from the rapists. Around 1 in 6 women will be raped in their lifetime. 1 in 5 girls, and 1 in 20 boys will be sexually abused as children.
- deprecative 3y agoDepending on the source it looks to be somewhere in the low single digit percentage as part of the population of men who will commit a crime, much less repeating violent crimes. We train women to be scared because fear sells not because they're actually at risk of strangers attacking them. I always have doubts about male victim numbers being used for anything. We know for a fact that men will not report things like that at near the same rate that women will and women don't report all that they should, either.

- d13 3y ago“Experts Say AI Boyfriend Apps Are Training Women to Be Even Worse” Are they so blind? This is disgusting.
- ImPostingOnHN 3y agoare they, though? taking a phrase and swapping words around doesn't make the resulting phrase equally true
- AnimalMuppet 3y agoPerhaps not. But if the resulting phrase makes you think "woah, that sounds really sexist", then maybe the original phrase is also problematic.
- ImPostingOnHN 3y agothe resulting phrase just makes you think "this is neither sexist nor true, and the person making it has a chip on their shoulder"
- clipsy 3y agoSounds pretty benign in comparison to many accusations the cultural right routinely levels at women.
- bell-cot 3y ago"Even Worse" than what actual alternative? It doesn't sound like the men were making a choice between the GF app and an uplifting and mutually satisfying relationship with a carbon-based woman.
- throwawaysleep 3y agoPrecisely. These are not people who have a relationship as a serious option anyway, so it is best that they are sated as best as possible with AI rather than turning into the terrorists they tend to admire.
- baobabKoodaa 3y agoI'd wager that the majority of Replika users have had and will have real relationships.
- atum47 3y agoI remember being insulted like that by just waking on campus, back in college. From time to time there were posters on the walls calling man rapists, woman beaters or worse. Sad to see that even in a tech forum I get to see things like that.
