I feel gaslit whenever people don’t identify their position and try to masquerade as something different. It’s become a very popular bad faith technique in recent years. Seems particularly popular on the new populist right but is not exclusively used there.

- dekhn 3y agoThat's not what gaslighting is. Gaslighting is the use of psychological techniques to undermine somebody's self confidence and sense of reality. It was, for a while, used on social media in a different way: "somebody is saying something I don't agree with, and it's one of my core tenets!" To use it in the latter form demeans the word's underlying complexity and extreme threat.
