Apple sales drop 5% in largest quarterly revenue decline since 2016
- mensetmanusman 4y ago$1500 phones might be an issue.
- stjohnswarts 4y agoCertainly means I'm waiting for generation old phones to come on the market
- chadcmulligan 4y agoAlso Macs that no longer run windows
- icedchai 4y agoYou know you can still run Windows for ARM, right?
- TheLoafOfBread 4y agoYeah, but not really much applications on it. Even something ubiquitous like Dropbox won't work on ARM. At least that's my experience with Windows 11 on ARM which I am using for testing.
- pohl 4y agoIt’s amazing that MS, despite its vast resources, hasn’t managed to improve this situation. Tiny, beleaguered NeXT had fat binaries for 4 architectures. Surely Redmond could solve this.
- TheLoafOfBread 4y agoI mean this is more-less unwillingness of developers to compile for ARM. Look at Notepad++, Python 3 or VSCode, there are ARM version which works exactly same. Simple Win32 applications are working fine, they will get emulated. I only don't understand why is it necessary to have GUI blurred when the application is emulated. You can see that even parts of the core windows dialogs are getting emulated due to this blurred GUI. Apps like Dropbox, will recognize that you are installing them on ARM and will go just NOPE, not supported.
- pohl 4y agoNeXT faced that same possibility, and they dealt with it by making it as easy as activating a single check box, so that it would be silly for developers not to.
- chadcmulligan 4y agoyes, and as TheLoafOfBread says, it doesn't help for a lot of apps. The thing that yanks my chain is it did work for a little while, and they disabled that feature.
- clnq 4y agoThere is no point in running something so unpractical.
- alwillis 4y agoFor the vast majority of Mac users, it’s a non-issue. Since ARM-based Macs have shipped, the Mac has had several record quarters.
- Agingcoder 4y agoI have to say that I don't quite understand who can afford their hardware (I'm not talking quality or value for money , just absolute price). I remember considering to buy an iPhone the last time I had to replace my phone, then realizing that not only a more or less equivalent android phone would be significantly cheaper, but that the Apple phone was outrageously expensive. It was so expensive in comparison that I thought they were being greedy and didn't want to give them money !
- anm89 4y agoEasy, almost anyone can afford 36 $50 payments. Most fast food employees can afford that. On the other hand, I think as a country, an astonishing amount of people would be in a very bad spots if we head into an economic downturn.
- chii 4y ago> almost anyone can afford 36 $50 payments. Most fast food employees can afford that. except if those fast food employees ceases to be employees in a downturn. The problem is that taking on debt for consumable products is not a good financial decision. You don't need an iphone - you can live with a low-end android that could be had for less than $200.
- seanmcdirmid 4y agoFast food usually picks up in downturns. It’s the fancier restaurants that lose business.
- simplotek 4y agoI don't think it's right to assume that fast food jobs are a hallmark of job security.
- seanmcdirmid 4y agoThe quote I was replying to was literally > except if those fast food employees ceases to be employees in a downturn Which just doesn’t happen in practice. I didn’t make any other claims in my comment.
- simonh 4y agoIf that was the only option and you couldn’t get a brand new iPhone for $600, sure. They’re a high end brand, so down turns are difficult. They’ll be fine though, the impact us usually not all that bad though. People tend to just buy one rung down the product line than they otherwise would, or a year later rather than not at all. I have to say I’m impressed with iPad prices though, $329 for a full size model is a steal.
- kgbcia 4y agoMy phone cost $1 a month in this plan for 2 years.
- slaw 4y agoYou can have $15 a month plan in US or $2 a month in Cambodia. If you pay more, it means your phone cost is included in your phone plan.
- twoodfin 4y agoThe issue was they couldn’t make enough of those $1500 phones for the holiday season. Supply, not demand.
- seabriez 4y agoIt's a lie, used to fool investors into Apple FUD. How ironic and convenient to use this excuse for this qtr.
- alwillis 4y agoSo there’s been a worldwide supply chain disruption with electronics but you think Apple is making it up. COVID shutdown a lot of China’s manufacturing—guess where high end iPhones are made…
- stjohnswarts 4y agoyeah I think you're right, I doubt this will happen next earnings report since things have improved a bit and the economy has plateaued for a bit (recession in progress?).
- alwillis 4y agoThen it’s probably a good thing the iPhone SE is priced at $429—$17.87 per month on a two year contract.
- kerpotgh 4y ago[dead]
- lockhouse 4y agoYes the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra for $1379.99 is soooo much cheaper. https://www.samsung.com/us/smartphones/galaxy-s23-ultra/buy/ https://www.samsung.com/us/smartphones/galaxy-s23-ultra/buy/
- Sakos 4y agoUh... https://www.wsj.com/articles/samsung-q4-earnings-report-2022-11675123832?mod=hp_lista_pos1 https://www.wsj.com/articles/samsung-q4-earnings-report-2022... > South Korean giant saw operating profit drop 69%, hit by falling sales of chips and smartphones as demand for gadgets languishes
- acdha 4y agoThe point is that this is a cliched lazy trolling point by Android users. iPhones cost more than the cheapest tier of Android devices but once you’re out of that tier the prices are pretty similar, and relatively few people are buying the top-end devices of either variety. It’s also incomplete because iPhones are much faster and historically have been supported years longer: if you had $200 for a phone, buying an iPhone two generations back will likely get you the same number of years of use. There’s something like a 4 year gap between Apple’s CPU performance and everyone else when it comes to single-threaded performance, and that’s what people notice the most since it affects things like browser speed and people buying cheap phones probably aren’t playing demanding games which are aggressively multicore.
- Sakos 4y agoThe OP only said that it's probably due to $1500 phones. Nothing about iOS vs Android. The comment under that made that argument. Samsung phones are also at that wild pricing and Samsung is also seeing a drop in sales. They're all in the same boat.
- acdha 4y agoYeah, I get that but it’s just not an especially insightful point: that’s double what the average buyer pays and, more importantly, someone who buys literally the most expensive configuration possible will spend considerably more than that on service over the life of the device.
- perryizgr8 4y agoI don't think it is a price issue, like other commenters. I think the price is in line with previous editions, just adjusted for inflation. The real reason is that newer versions of iPhone have been utterly meh. Absolutely no new innovations. The screen looks dated. The design is tired. The camera tech has plateaued. Storage sizes have plateaued. Battery life has plateaued. CPU improvements have lost any meaning for the average user, given apples inability to write software that takes advantage of the gains. So why should I drop $1000 for no meaningful improvement or added use case? If I'm gonna spend that much money I'd rather try the folding phone from Samsung. It's got something new.
- jakear 4y agoThe one development is the satellite connectivity. For me and my friends, this is a pretty huge feature as most weekends (especially during hunting season), we're far from service with all sorts of injury-causing devices and accident-invoking substances at hand. Unfortunately, I bought my 12 mini long ago and it's still going strong, and my friend bought the version without satellite because he didn't even know that was an available feature. So good feature, zero uptake. Blame marketing.
- MaysonL 4y agoNote that this quarter spanned 14 weeks, while last year had 13. This was actually 7% or so worse than at first glance.
- Tagbert 4y agoWith the factory that builds iPhone Pros out of production for several weeks due to covid infections and protests about factory policies around covid, Apple was not able to deliver their most profitable product during the highest volume quarter of the year. It’s no wonder their revenue was down.
