CarSized: A way to visualise car dimensions
- kennybrea 4y agoFound this and thought it's neat to see the dimensions of cars properly. Mostly because there's a larger influx of American pickups in my town and I'm not enjoying it one bit.
- CalRobert 4y agoWas weird to see so many Dodge Rams in the Netherlands.
- Doxin 4y agoWhere do all these people even park those behemoths? Do they just double park all of the time?
- Laarlf 4y agoI would assume that if you go out of your way to have a company and buy a massive pickup that is more expensive than a Van and less usable you probably do not give a shit. The fact that they can basically ignore BPM on company cars is absolutely stupid.
- michpoch 4y agoYeah but you buy a pickup for a work that you could not do with a van. Pickups are for farmers, how do you carry pigs or a pile of dirt in a van?
- dsfyu404ed 4y ago>how do you carry pigs or a pile of dirt in a van? With less convenience and more difficulty. I've done that kind of stuff, not great but it works. I can definitely see why people who don't very, very, very frequently need the enclosed cargo space prefer the pickups over vans.
- Gordonjcp 4y agoYou don't, you carry them in a trailer. How do you carry them in pickup?
- davedx 4y agoYup! Even when they could have fit it into a single slot, often they'll take two
- yourusername 4y agoPresumably the same place they would park the Mercedes Sprinter that they would have otherwise that is about the same size. The people driving American pickups in the Netherlands are almost all contractors and they're a bit shorter and a bit wider than a Mercedes Sprinter.
- krisoft 4y ago> The people driving American pickups in the Netherlands are almost all contractors and they're a bit shorter and a bit wider than a Mercedes Sprinter. I imagined all these people who are only a bit shorter but a bit wider than a van. :)
- jameshart 4y agoSmall nit: ‘double parking’ does not mean ‘parking in two parking spaces’. It generally means parallel parking next to a car that is already parallel parked - ie, parking roadside in a second row alongside a first row of parked cars. More generally it refers to doubling up two cars in a parking space in such a way that one car blocks the other in (eg parking two cars nose to tail in a long parking bay)
- InitialLastName 4y agoAt least in my region, the phrase is used about evenly to refer to both: - Parking in the roadway next to the row of parallel parked cars/in other ways such that parked cars are blocked in and - Parking a single car such that two parking spots are obstructed (unjustifiably so, e.g. nobody would likely talk that way about an RV taking two parallel parking spots). The difference in usage seems to depend on whether you (and your local cohort) spend more of your time parking in parking lots or on the street.
- jameshart 4y agoDouble parking is a legal term for a specific traffic violation. People who use it to refer to parking across two bays in a parking lot are using it wrong. It’s like saying ‘well people in my region use the word “speeding” both to refer to going over the speed limit, and for going through a red light’. People in your region have heard a term and misunderstood it. Laws commonly include exceptions like; > Vehicles used ordinarily for transportation of merchandise may double park for the purpose of, but only while engaged in, the expeditious loading or unloading - that doesn’t mean delivery vehicles can park across two bays in a parking lot.
- InitialLastName 4y ago> People in your region have heard a term and misunderstood it. Language is how people use it. That sounds like a perfectly valid route to adding a colloquial meaning to a word.
- smm11 4y ago"Toyota" shows one car. "Ford" shows one car.
- losvedir 4y agoVery cool! I just did some car shopping and compiled a spreadsheet of the various dimensions of the cars we were considering. This would have been a perfect tool for us. It's kind of hard to really get a sense of the numbers otherwise. Looks like it doesn't have a way of visualizing interiors, unfortunately.
- pikma 4y ago+1, this would have been super to me too when buying a car with the constraint of having a tiny garage with a weird shape. What I really wanted was a tool that lets me draw the plan of the garage and then tells me if I'll be able to park my car, and the margin (min offset to wall during the whole maneuver). I couldn't find that at the time sadly.
- poly_morphis 4y ago+1 for the interiors. I'm doing car shopping right now, and this is the type of thing I've been looking for. I wanted a way to visualize the approximate height difference of sitting in the cabin of a CUV vs sedan.
- nawgz 4y agoSubaru Outback has the best cabin
- friendzis 4y agoI agree on the sentiment. Take some old "large" car and newish midsize car. While the old car will be huge on the outside, steering wheel to backseat distance will be pretty very much comparable. And aside from general ergonomics, that's the thing one usually cares about when looking for larger than micro cars
- tmnvix 4y agoYou could include an image behind the vehicles for scale. Perhaps a family.
- hbarka 4y agoor banana boxes https://youtu.be/RB6ZrjftKu8 https://youtu.be/RB6ZrjftKu8
- pcurve 4y agoI did GMC Yukon extended and Mini cooper 3door. And swap the order. Mini entire length is the same as Yukon wheelbase.
- userbinator 4y agoUnfortunately the longest and shortest vehicles in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_automotive_superlatives#Length https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_automotive_superlative... aren't there, but this is the closest I could find: https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/bmw-isetta-1955-1-door-cabriolet-vs-rolls-royce-phantom-2012-sedan/ https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/bmw-isetta-1955-1-d...
- netgusto 4y agoFound longer! Dodge RAM 2500 https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/bmw-isetta-1955-1-door-cabriolet-vs-dodge-ram-2010-pickup-2500-crew-cab-4wd/ https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/bmw-isetta-1955-1-d...
- parker_mountain 4y agoThe 2500 also has the highest amount of drunk drivers per capita in the US. Truly, a terrifying vehicle.
- tw98521358 4y agoIt’s not a good buy so people that get them are by nature have poor impulse control. I’d love to see a chart of car vs avg credit rating sometime
- dsfyu404ed 4y agoThe "firsts" section of the wikipedia link needs a whole bunch of "depends how you define" type footnotes.
- Helmut10001 4y agoThis is me driving with my Space Star on the Autobahn [1] [1]: https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/mitsubishi-mirage-2016-5-door-hatchback-vs-lincoln-navigator-2017-suv/ https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/mitsubishi-mirage-2...
- dotancohen 4y agoClick on the front view. The Lincoln's grill comes up to the Mitsu's head rest!
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- HereBeBeasties 4y agoSpare a thought in your enormous hatchback for those of us who can't even see through your back window to the road in front, as you tower over us: https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/lotus-elise-2011-roadster-vs-mitsubishi-mirage-2016-5-door-hatchback/ https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/lotus-elise-2011-ro... ;-)
- mechanical_bear 4y agoNo Toyota Tacoma…probably the most popular truck in many US states. No Ram trucks. No Subaru WRX, nor BRZ. Really neat concept, but I wish it had more US vehicles.
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- userbinator 4y agoThe Ram is there and so is a WRX: https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/subaru-impreza-2014-sedan-wrx-vs-dodge-ram-2010-pickup-2500-crew-cab-4wd/ https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/subaru-impreza-2014... But you're right about the others --- this site seems to be Europe-focused.
- Nition 4y agoIt does have the Toyota Hilux, which is very similar to the Tacoma.
- chrisBob 4y agoThe Hilux works if your goal is to compare a random compact car to an average midsize truck, but if your goal is to look at how a Ford Ranger compares to a Toyota Tacoma then you are out of luck. I am currently shopping for a new vehicle, and this comparison could be very useful if it had the models I am considering.
- Gordonjcp 4y agoDodge Ram is about the same as a small or mid-size Ford Transit, so you could pick one of those.
- jsmith45 4y ago"Dodge Ram" hasn't been a thing since 2010, when they spit Ram out to be a separate brand. However the site does have a 2010-2019 (a.k.a 4th generation Ram) listed under the Dodge brand, which is technically fair, because the initial units of the 4th generation were Dodge branded. However to add the 5th generation they would really need to split it out as a sperate brand to be correct, and if they do so, they should duplicate the 4th generation into the new brand.
- ck2 4y agoI'd like to see like three different sized humans to scale in front of the vehicles to show how much or little the driver can see. Like the way kids are invisible when they cross in front of modern American pickups and SUVs
- LisaDziuba 4y ago[dead]
- jakebasile 4y agoI've found a few of these types of sites over time, and I find them pretty handy. This one gets added to the list! There's Handgun Hero [1] for comparing ... handgun sizes, which is super handy when window shopping for something new, to compare it to something I already have. There's Camera Size [2] which compares, you guessed it, cameras. Handy for the exact same reasons as the above. For a more technical comparison you can use DPReview's comparator [3]. [1]: https://www.handgunhero.com/ https://www.handgunhero.com/ [2]: https://camerasize.com/ https://camerasize.com/ [3]: https://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/cameras https://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/cameras
- etrautmann 4y agoHow often does someone need to buy new handguns?
- sawjet 4y agoMore often than I buy new cars
- omeid2 4y agoIn USA, gun per capita is over 2 and majority of democrats, who approach almost 50%, do not own guns. So the answer is "often", if you consider USA.
- sokoloff 4y agoThe data I looked up suggested it was 1.2 guns/American (not over 2.0), but in any case, I think the majority of both parties own exactly zero (56% of Republicans and 80% of Democrats per a survey in the same article). https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2022/06/02/us/gun-ownership-numbers-us-cec/index.html https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2022/06/02/us/gun-ownership-numbers-...
- AlgorithmicTime 4y ago[dead]
- ggm 4y agoMG & BYD? more chinese makes, they're killing the EV market.
- timidiceball 4y agoYea the first thing I looked up was Hongqi (specifically the E-Hs9) as they’ve grown popular here.
- xnx 4y agoVery cool. Is there a way to make the front and rear views overlap like the side view does?
- albert_e 4y agoI had the exact comment to make. Overlapped view gives the easiest way to compare. A transparency slider might also be useful. Going further a 3D model of cars set side-by-side on a rotatable plaform would be next step i guess though the value:complexity may not be that great. One could put a person standing next to it and make the person's height adjustable too :) I feel like a product manager who doesn't need to care about implementation complexity :)
- wpietri 4y agoWhoa. For me its cookie choice box gives me one choice: agreeing to be tracked. I've never seen that, but it strikes me as pretty rude.
- ComodoHacker 4y agoActually it offers second choice if you read the text. Don't agree and lose some vertical space while using the site.
- kqr 4y agoRight click, inspect, delete cookie question element!
- dotancohen 4y agoFortunately the browser has the option to disable cookies. I've never understood why people just don't use this option.
- tobyhinloopen 4y agoHow do you login
- ruined 4y agologin to what? as far as i can tell, it has no account functionality
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- ajsnigrutin 4y agoYep, browsers should have per-domain cookie jars that get wiped when the all tabs/windows using that domain are closed.. and then a button not to wipe them on those few domains that you actually need them (to stay logged in). But this is what you get when you have politicians dealing with technology.
- a-b 4y agoGreat idea! I hope to see improved search and size filtering in future versions. It's annoying to select the maker first and later model. It would be great if I can type the model, select year, and get results.
- logicallee 4y agoThe page lists "858705 comparison combinations": https://imgur.com/a/coBCan8 https://imgur.com/a/coBCan8 For anyone who is curious what means, it means they must have 1311 cars in the database. (1311 cars for the first choice * 1310 cars for the second choice assuming you can't compare a car against itself, divided by two since order doesn't matter. 1311*1310/2=858705.) How I found it: https://hastebin.com/raw/ekeqegoxuv https://hastebin.com/raw/ekeqegoxuv If anyone wants to hire me as a data scientist, my email is open :) I code Python, R, and the major languages (a bit of JavaScript, Go, whatever is needed) and am interested in AI, my latest project is here: https://github.com/robss2020/computerplayverysexymusic https://github.com/robss2020/computerplayverysexymusic
- defrost 4y agoAhhh, likely there's a few restrictions to "comparisons within groups" for some value of {group} ? Is there any notion of 'same' as in only { sedans | trucks } to { sedans | trucks } etc?
- logicallee 4y agono restrictions, meanwhile I found the answer :) (I put my original question into a pastebin) But thank you.
- bnegreve 4y ago> For anyone who is curious what means, it means they must have 1311 cars in the database. They do, the list is available here https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/ https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/. A quick pipe of this list into wc -l gives you 1311.
- logicallee 4y agoThank you. Nice to have that confirmation! :D
- King-Aaron 4y agoNo NA mx5 :( But some fairly obscure cars in other brands lol.
- BoorishBears 4y agoI was shocked to see my 124 Spider listed But the NB is pretty similar dimensionally to the NA, only the NC is entirely missing
- felipelalli 4y agoIt doesn't have my car. :-(
- delta_p_delta_x 4y agoHuh, there is less difference between D-segment (3-series, A4, C-class) and E-segment (5-series, A6, E-class) cars than I thought.
- a10c 4y agoOne thing it's missing that would be immensely useful is a leg room comparison in front / back seats
- totetsu 4y agoFor some reason this reminds me of the video games that taught me to aim RPGs with iron sights by memorizing the dimensions of in game vehicles and comparing it to a little measure on the sight to estimate distance and so how far to adjust the aim upwards..
- dsfyu404ed 4y agoInformation regarding what common objects your front sight is the width of at various ranges is pretty a standard inclusion (though not a particularly emphasized part) training in professional armies. Many optical sights also incorporate similar features.
- brulard 4y agoThis is beautiful. It must have been a lot of work to collect all that data and images. Although the UX is a little shaky. When searching for a vehicle the UI jumps around. And it would be useful to just search for a vehicle in a single query and not have to go always through the manufacturer first.
- pacoverdi 4y agoPretty cool. Looks like there are some scaling issues though: https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/peugeot-5008-2017-suv-vs-citroen-c4-spacetourer-2018-5-door-minivan-lwb/front/ https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/peugeot-5008-2017-s... Front side: the 5008 looks smaller even though it's taller. Rear side: the 5008 looks taller.
- Jolter 4y agoSo the Citroen looks taller even though it’s shorter by measurement. Isn’t this exactly the effect they are explaining in the FAQ? (Link at the bottom of the page). Depending on the curvature of the roof line, if you stand closer or further away, perspective will make one car or the other look taller.
- pacoverdi 4y agoThanks, I did not see the FAQ which was hidden underneath the cookie banner :) You may be right. When looking at the side view, the rear of the 5008 seems a little higher, while the height of the front part is pretty similar in both cars.
- VanTodi 4y agoSadly no marauder in the selection. Would love to see the comparison
- unglaublich 4y agoShould compare it to average parking spot size.
- a3w 4y agoSo, no tanks for comparison? Guess some would be smaller. > At over five meters, the Mercedes GL X166 is one of the largest SUVs. According to the German Transport Club, it is even bigger than a tank. (Actually, "than a Panzer", and discussing what is a tank and what is not is the same w/ the Panzerwaffe in germany, e.g. a Marder, not a Leopard, here)
- Someone 4y agoThe original Panzer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_I https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_I) was only 4 meters and 2 centimeters long. That’s large for a tankette (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankette https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankette. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carden_Loyd_tankette https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carden_Loyd_tankette shows how small these could be) but small for a tank.
- AdamN 4y agoThis site is old school but a bit more informative and fast (from a UX perspective): https://www.automobiledimension.com/car-comparison.php https://www.automobiledimension.com/car-comparison.php One thing missing is rear leg room (which is critical for me right now with a family of 4)
- spacehunt 4y agoUnfortunately this site is not useful for me, as it seems there is no way to select my current car, a VW Golf Mk6 5 door.
- huhtenberg 4y agoYours is far less useful as all cars are rendered roughly the same size and side by side. Its utility and its UX is tangibly inferior to the submitted site.
- avereveard 4y agoBummer that the front/rear view isn't superimposed, pillars angle and position is a major factor in internal space
- emzo 4y agoThis is really well done. I'd love to see some more info about the process of photographing the cars.
- gregod 4y agoThis is a good example for an interactive non-SPA. JS only for cosmetics and all state is fully stored in the URLs. The main pages could even be statically generated (858705 combinations * 3 views * 8KB = 20GB).
- sandos 4y agoTheyr'e missing Rivian!
- huhtenberg 4y ago> 858705 comparison combinations So 1311 cars in their database.
- Toutouxc 4y agoYou don't even have to mess around with Smarts and Minis... The car I [try not to] drive (a Škoda Rapid liftback) fits four 180 cm (5'10") adults and their baggage for a week, yet I could almost drive UNDERNEATH some of the crap I have to share the roads with (LR Discovery, F-150, BMW X8). I used to love cars and driving, now they disgust me, along with the whole my-car-is-my-identity culture.
- Gordonjcp 4y agoAnd yet your "little" Skoda is the same size as a first or second generation Landrover Discovery, and a bawhair smaller than my second-gen Range Rover...
- Toutouxc 4y ago> your "little" Skoda That's the thing, it's not "little" in my book, but a full sized car. It comfortably fits an average family (or a group of four adults) and their stuff for a week-long vacation. > same size as a first or second generation Landrover Discovery It's 25 % lower and 5 % narrower than the first generation, but I understand that the Discovery is an off-road car, and I also consider it a full sized car, just like mine. The evolution should've stopped (or been regulated) right around there.
- itsoktocry 4y ago[flagged]
- bjt2n3904 4y ago> my-car-is-my-identity culture Projection much?
- forgetfulness 4y agoFor instance: https://www.reddit.com/gallery/y78psk https://www.reddit.com/gallery/y78psk
- 4y ago
- causi 4y agoI got excited about this but then neither the car I currently own nor the car I'm considering buying are listed.
- PaulWaldman 4y agoDoes anyone know of a more generic version of this site? One where you can upload pictures with known dimensions and they can then be scaled accordingly.
- logicalmonster 4y agoThis is pretty cool, but IMO a missing feature of this website would be to show cars in front/back of the side view to display what it looks like trying to park. The biggest reason to get a smaller car IMO is the easier time you have parking in tight spots. That would really highlight the differences.
- rr808 4y agoThis is great, its always difficult to see comparisons online. Of the the big 3 row SUV looks as big as the smallest compact. I'd love to see trunk space too.
- xtiansimon 4y agoOoh! I want motorcycles
- NikolaNovak 4y agoI was very excited, but it seems external dimension only, and I've found time and again that outside dimensions have lose relationship to inside dimensions. Choices and tradeoffs around engine orientation and placement, front vs rear vs trunk sizes etc, can all make a massive difference. They include cargo volume in numbers but not front/rear seat sizes, which is critical to me both as tall driver and with children seats :-/
- roughly 4y agoSo here’s my problem these days: https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/bmw-3-1997-coupe-vs-ford-f150-2014-4-door-pickup-supercrew-5.5/ https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/bmw-3-1997-coupe-vs...
- albertsun 4y agoThis is pretty interesting too: https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/bmw-3-1997-sedan-vs-bmw-3-2018-sedan/ https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/bmw-3-1997-sedan-vs... Same car has grown by 5% over 15 years.
- jdmichal 4y agoI love how obvious this makes the fact that truck headlights are perfectly placed to shine directly into the rear window and mirrors of a car. I've had to angle my side mirrors down sitting at a light with a truck behind me. They don't have dimming, and I end up just repeatedly blinding myself peeking in the mirror.
- zwilliamson 4y agoMy whole family worked for a major car manufacturer. My mother was the first woman tin smith hired there. I grew up loving cars (rural living). But now I’ve lost the love. I think mainly after seeing what they do to amazing cities like SF and Seattle my heart has changed. We need to subsidize and promote better personal mobility options. My daily driver is a Riese & Muller Load 60 e-cargo bike. I’ve had it since 2020. I’ve lived in multiple cities and it is an ideal personal mobility setup. My dog rides around with me too! Why am I the only one in this town riding around in one? It’s not a money problem. I see people buying secondary cars to drive 2 blocks to the grocery store. Is it a safety issue? Very fixable. Are people lazy? Absolutely, but they can be motivated. In the US we had a massive infra bill pass. How much is going to local pedestrian and cycling infrastructure? Just so frustrating the stranglehold cars have on us.
- djaychela 4y agoJust looked at the Riese & Muller. Looks great, but I think part of the problem with ebikes like this is that they -are- the price of a secondhand car, and most people will just go with that instead. I've got a 'normal' ebike, and I used it a lot in lockdown, and often use it to go to the local shops. Would love something like the R&M, but it's a lot of money...
- zwilliamson 4y agoPeople usually don’t look at the maintenance costs of owning a car. Gas, insurance, registration, tune ups, repairs. Then compare how much you’ll put into your R&M over the years. It doesn’t even come close to a cars yearly costs :)
- dfxm12 4y agoIt's part auto lobby, part ID pol. Conservatives, like Marjorie Taylor Greene, for some reason are against any mode of transportation that isn't powered by an ICE. She's said "Democrats like Pete Buttigieg want to emasculate the way we drive and force all of you to rely on electric vehicles". The bill had a hard time passing as it was...
- stefap2 4y agoNo Acura?
- dschep 4y agoYou should add a child and adult for scale. So many cars are just dangerously large these days.
- 1970-01-01 4y agoI would love to see standard garage sizes as a background. https://www.homestratosphere.com/standard-garage-dimensions/ https://www.homestratosphere.com/standard-garage-dimensions/
- moving_sofa 4y agoIt should show the weight difference, that is crucial to understand its impact on pedestrians and cyclists during collisions.
- hanlec 4y agoIt was no further than 1 week ago when I was talking with my spouse about how could we compare the size of some cars. We found it very tedious to even find the official dimension. And we had no idea how to visualize the differences. This is absolutely fabulous!
- wilsonckao 4y agoCan u do this for furniture dimensions?
- hnbad 4y agoIn case whoever operates the site is reading this: you have to add a way to dismiss the cookie consent banner without agreeing to the use of cookies, otherwise it makes it harder to use the site by partially obstructing the content, at which point it's no longer consensual and you might as well just set those cookies without asking.
