‘Unexpected item’: how self-checkouts failed to live up to their promise
- themitigating 4y agoHypothetically I would steal from the walmart self checkout because it's easy. There's so little chance of getting caught. I also have a political motivation so I have no moral qualms about it.
- rolenthedeep 4y agoWe should all be stealing products from self-checkouts equal in value to the hourly wage of a cashier. Company wants to replace a paid cashier with your unpaid labor, so you're entitled to take a little compensation.
- eternityforest 4y agoI wonder how this affects covid safety. Are cashiers like distribution hubs for it since they are exposed to so many people, wheras customers are only exposer to a few? Self checkout is also faster than employee checkout has been for as long as I can remember. It seems like most people feel they are safer, so at the very least it's a better customer experience for many.
- rdtwo 4y agoEach one is slower but you can run 4-6 in the space if 2 so net it’s probably a wash
- unsupp0rted 4y agoHow much should I be stealing from various self-service SaaS products?
- rolenthedeep 4y agoAs much as you possibly can
- jamincan 4y agoCount me as one of the people who far prefer self-checkout to regular checkout. As someone who isn't normally buying huge quantities of groceries at once, it is far quicker for me - my grocery store has about 12 kiosks, which means there is always a few available. My grocery also seems to not perceive theft as a major issue, as they actually eliminated the weight-control features on the kiosks in favour of smaller ones that eliminate them. This also makes the customer experience much better. Finally, I don't have to go through a ritualistic interaction with the cashier. It's not that I found it a negative experience in the past, but I far prefer avoiding it entirely.
- crmd 4y agoI was extremely impressed by Uniqlo’s self checkout recently in New York City. You dump all your stuff into a bin and it displays the total price. You then pay and leave. I assume this means every item has a serialized RFID tag embedded somewhere, since it can tell you have x number of SKU a, y number of SKU b, etc. Pretty cool IMO
- temporallobe 4y agoI absolutely detest self-checkouts as there is too much room for error, requiring human intervention anyway. On the other hand, Sam’s Club’s Scan and Go seems to be fantastic so far, and it’s a great example on how to do “self-checkout” the right way.
- charlie0 4y agoThe thing I hate the most about self checkouts is that you have to do it in a very specific manner or it won't work. I think Amazon has the right idea. You scan the item once as it goes into your basket and that's it. None this you have to scan and then weigh the fing item bs they have at grocery stores.
- marssaxman 4y agoAmazon Go does it even better: you don't scan anything at all - you just pick up what you want and walk out with it. Seconds later, a receipt arrives in your inbox.
