> One example of a person who has become a laird is the British novelist J. K. Rowling, who is best known as both the author of the bestselling series of children’s novels Harry Potter and also arguably the most influential proponent of transphobia in the English-speaking world today.
It should be noted that JK Rowling does not identify as a transphobe.
- anoonmoose 4y agoOh? Why is that?
- Nition 4y agoAre you asking why it should be noted? I'd say because often the Internet makes its mind up about things on limited evidence, or things getting exaggerated as they're repeated, and it's nice to hear the subject's side as well. Otherwise we might be left thinking Justine Sacco is racist etc.

- kcplate 4y agoNot taking a position one way or the other, but I think it’s really more accurate to describe that she is phobic to the redefinition of historically established words with definitions that describe people who have certain sexual organs.
- handoflixue 4y agoExcept it's not about sexual organs, because even getting surgery isn't enough to become a "real woman" by her logic.
- koonsolo 4y agoI'm all in favor of accommodating trans people to live a happy and fulfilled life, but everything has limits. If you define "real" as in: only a real man and a real woman can reproduce, then I guess there is your limit. That's not transphobic, that's reality.
- iamevn 4y agoReality? That's an entirely useless definition for anything I've ever had to care about in my life. It's also logically nonsense before you even get to considering whether people who are infertile get to be "real".
- koonsolo 4y agoOk, different problem then: if you allow all real women (as you define them) in female sports, then there will be no people who were born as female in the top sport. Maybe not a problem for you, but it is a problem if you were born female. In that case the "the people who were born female" seem to need an action group. But they can't because that would be transphobic.
- iamevn 4y agoAgain, this is a garbage transphobic argument. It leads to people questioning the woman-ness of even cis women who are good at sport. We already have problems where women with naturally higher testosterone than usual are banned from competing[1] or salty parents calling for an investigation into a child's gender because their kids got beaten in sports[2]. TERF shit like this hurts all women. - ben_w 4y ago"Trans-exclusionary radical feminist" is the etymology of "TERF", which is IIRC what she's objecting to being called (but I don't know because the search results are polluted by the drama of the arguments rather than the actual causes). IIRC (same caveat) she's being called that as a result of excluding trans women from her definition of women. If this was about logic (rather than the way certain labels are applied and can become terms of abuse divorced from their original context[0]), then that would imply she was objecting to being called a "radical feminist". [0] e.g. "artificial", "hysteria", and arguably "Lucifer"
- xdennis 4y agoTERF and transfobic are both terms used to smear people who don't agree with some changes. They're rarely targeted at bad people. Instead, the terms are used to bully people into agreeing with unwanted changes. Take the word "woman". Until recently, it had a definition clearly understood by everyone (see Kindergarten Cop). But now, if you don't agree with the redefinition you're labeled a TERF/transphobe.
- ben_w 4y agoThe medical community has a much more "it depends what you mean" attitude to gender (androgen insensitive XY vs. normal XX to name one of at least a dozen edge cases), and various nation's legal communities have recognised transitioning for a long time now. Culturally, attitudes have also varied a lot historically even prior to meaningful medical interventions. I can barely remember any of Kindergarten Cop let alone trans issues, but a random film, no matter how entertaining, barely tells you about general culture, let alone what is "clearly understood by everyone" — it's not like the popularity of the MCU is evidence of "everyone" being pagans even though it features a race of gods as main characters.

- discardable_dan 4y agoFunny, cuz trans women are assaulted and killed by the dozens in men's rooms and there might have been two cases ever of a man dressing as a woman specifically to enter a female bathroom and assault a woman.
- notch656a 4y agoTrans women are being killed by the dozens in men's bathrooms? Can I see the source, is this in Chechnya or Pakistan or something? Assaulted I can believe; hell I think you could easily find dozens of straight on straight assaults in male bathrooms (not that it makes either one right).
- handoflixue 4y ago> brandishing a penis That's not exactly a neutral phrase. If someone is actively harassing someone in the changing room, there are presumably policies to deal with that. It's also telling that you focus solely on that. Shouldn't you be equally alarmed by a guy "brandishing their penis" at little boys? And why is it okay to "brandish your vagina and breasts"? If genitalia simply existing is a problem, then obviously the whole concept of a changing room is offensive and we need to move to single-occupancy stalls.
- proc0 4y agoIt's a combination of bathrooms usually having no way of being monitored with cameras and such, and a part of the population feeling vulnerable, because the reality is one genitalia penetrates, and the other gets penetrated.

- happyopossum 4y ago> Rowling’s intense transphobia is not up for debate As long as people are not willing to even enter in to a conversation about the definition of a woman, then no - I guess it isn’t. Thanks for clarifying that for the rest of us.
- ClassyJacket 4y ago>Rowling’s intense transphobia is not up for debate You said the quiet part out loud again. The only reason to be unwilling to enter a conversation at all is if you know you have no argument. The point, obviously, is that if you can be a woman just by claiming to be one, you should be able to be non-transphobic just by claiming to be. She hasn't said anything unreasonable, she's just being attacked for not joining a modern day internet cult.
- telchar 4y agoShe’s that not because she has claimed to be, but because she lives as one in mind, word and deed. That’s what makes women women as well, not simply claiming to be one. That you don’t recognize the difference between the lived experience and the simple acclamation may explain why you have the opinion you do both this point and the broader topic. I’d suggest thinking more about that difference.
- discardable_dan 4y agoShe has openly and repeatedly called for laws and policies that restrict and damage what it means to be a trans person. She has openly and repeatedly insisted that "biological sex" should dominate "gender preference" for individuals, even if and when those decisions would harm the individual in question. She has openly and repeatedly engaged in bad-faith and strawman arguments around things like bathroom policies, availability of transition information, and what motivates people to transition. She has openly and repeatedly insisted that transitioning is completely choice-based, a statement entirely at odds with well-researched and well-documented information about gender dysphoria. Imagine if someone claimed those things about being homosexual: it's down to biology who you have sex with, not preference; it's not safe to allow homosexuals into a bathroom with people they are attracted to; teenagers should not have access to information about homosexuality; homosexuality is a social trend and not a personal choice. I would, very rightly so, be labeled a homophobic. The only reason you might think she isn't transphobic is that if you, yourself, are transphobic and don't want that label to apply to yourself. Unfortunately, bigotry is bigotry.
