Using laptops the last decade, charging was such a pain: it’s a special charger in the first place, you can’t just borrow another brand’s cable lying around.
Depending on the brick it won’t charge at the same speed, you can check the wattage on the brick, but buying another one is more than 60+ dollars. Fraying a cable is the same cost, you replace the whole thing.
Even just for that USB-C is a boon, and paying an expensive cable is still cheaper than what we had before.
- ls15 5y ago> cheaper than what we had before *still have in our drawers
- rchaud 5y agoIsn't the same true for USB-C laptops? I've found non-OEM cables as unreliable for anything besides USB data sync. An Apple MagSafe to USB-C costs $60. I bought one replacement power brick for a laptop I've been using for 10 years. Well worth the $40 or whatever I paid on eBay. Plus there's no way I'd confuse it with the mass of USB-c cables that comes with every modern tech device.
- Melatonic 5y agoIf you want reliable generally USB-IF certified cables will be higher quality. I do not know if they also certify for power but I imagine if a cable is USB-IF certified and also claims higher power PD then it is probably going to be pretty reliable.

I have a dozen of USB-C cables and exactly one that can charge my higher-power devices reliably
- EricE 5y agoSo get more higher quality cables and throw the other ones out? How is your lack of the proper cable when all you need to do is buy more of the right cables equivalent to a failure of the standard?!?
- albedoa 5y agoI have six opened jars of salsa in my fridge, and exactly one is not spoiled. This is a problem with salsa.
- boesboes 5y agoBecause the standard allows for different quality cables? You get the cheapest possible cable for what they are selling you, so they are not really interchangeable. Not to speak of brand name devices that have usb-c ports but cannot be powered with usb-c chargers...
- jcelerier 5y agoI bought: - https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B08XNP4C2Z/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B08XNP4C2Z/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_... - https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0882V5Q8W/ref=pe_27091421_487030221_TE_dp_1 https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0882V5Q8W/ref=pe_27091421_48703022... - https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B081HQLMH4/ref=pe_27091421_487030221_TE_dp_1 https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B081HQLMH4/ref=pe_27091421_48703022... and I have issues with all of those. what else can I do ? how much is one supposed to put in to get good quality cables and hubs ? 200€ ? 500 ?
- bin_bash 5y agohttps://www.apple.com/shop/product/MLL82AM/A/usb-c-charge-cable-2-m https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MLL82AM/A/usb-c-charge-ca... $19 and can handle up to 96w. It's probably the only product that Apple offers as a bargain.
- lou1306 5y agoIf the standard allows for "right" and "wrong" cables, then it is not a "successful" standard unless you stretch the definition of "success" almost beyond recognition.
- wink 5y agoI'm not saying you're wrong, but this is another decade-long battle. I have a few laptops here, the newest is from 2016 - none of them has USB-C and they all still work and will probably be in use for another few years. My 1y old work Latitude (attached to a docking station via USB-C, but the wallplug charger is a proprietary one) is being replaced with another Latitude which only has USB-C. So because I didn't notice that I need a new charger now I can only run the new one on battery or with the docking station until I get to the office.. Great, I just managed to have the one breaking change :P
