Russia says it may cut gas supplies if oil ban goes ahead
- usrbinbash 5y agoIt's March, so it'll be more than 6 months before serious heating is required again in middle Europe...more than enough time to get Liquid Gas from the middle east. Would that be inconvenient for Germany and other countries in the same region? Certainly. Rising prices, economic fallout, the whole thing will be very inconvenient. But to Russias economy, it will be outright devastating, as production and sale of natural gas and oil are a major pillar of it's GDP. The west has ways out of this, and the financial and structural resources to use them. Liquid Gas from the middle east to bridge the gaps, development of the Norvegian production as a middle-tier solution, and ultimately changing it's energy politics entirely to renewable energies, nuclear power (the latter includes researching fusion energy, which will become the dominant energy source at some point).
- _0w8t 5y agoNote that this is not official words from Kremlin. Russia and even Soviet Union always tried to play a role of a trusted partner that would fulfill contracts no matter what. Using threat of cutting gas supplies can be used only once.
- dekhn 5y agoSooner the better. This is a pain Europe needs to feel (as a consequence of some fairly bad decisionmaking) and we need to get through it.
- seanmcdirmid 5y agoSpring is almost here also, it’s not like cutting gas supplies in January.
