Nintendo never said they were getting out of consoles.
- noobermin 6y agoRequired a little bit of googling, but here[0] is one article that expresses the attitude nintendo had at the end of 2019 and early 2020 pre-pandemic that coincided with the release of ACNH. They didn't say they were getting out of consoles but they were planning to pivot to mobile, which did poorly especially compared to ACNH and the switch in general which was a hit in the midst of lockdowns. Hard to find old news articles from back then as google highlights the most recent news ofc.
- resfirestar 6y agoThat article says: >Nintendo's new president Shuntaro Furukawa told Nikkei that they don't have a big focus on their consoles. And then attempts to illustrate this point with a quote saying the exact opposite thing: >At the moment we're offering the uniquely developed Nintendo Switch and its software--and that's what we're basing how we deliver the 'Nintendo experience' on. That being said, technology changes. We'll continue to think flexibly about how to deliver that experience as time goes on In other words, that Nintendo's primary focus for how it delivers its flagship experiences was on the Switch, and they had no concrete plans to change that! What was the author thinking?
- noobermin 6y agoThe quote is likely translated from a longer interview japanese, and it politely hints at moving away without saying it. The linked quote by someone else is in fact saying, "Yeah the switch is our special product...but technology changes and we're going to evaluate where we're going." "Technology changes" = money is in mobile, we want to move there. That ended up flopping as I said and they've realized the switch did better than their mobile games.
- zapzupnz 6y agoIt’s like either you read the report backwards or the author doesn’t know their arse from their elbow — I’ll go with the later. Nintendo said they’re moving away from mobile because of how disappointing revenue has been, not to it. Rest assured, Nintendo’s console business remains their focus. All games they’ve announced in development are for Switch and rumours of a Switch Pro may actually have something to them. They haven’t released a new mobile game for a long time, just content updates to existing ones. Switch is Nintendo’s cash cow at the moment; they haven’t had a console do so well since the Wii and software sell so well since the NES and Game Boy days.

- noobermin 6y ago>Nintendo said they’re moving away from mobile because of how disappointing revenue has been, not to it. The article didn't say that...yes that was apparent recently but it wasn't apparent in 2019 when Mario Kart Tour was just released. I realize the pandemic warped people's sense of time, but in 2019 it was common belief people had that the switch was the last effort of Nintendo, and given Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo was trying to pivot to a mobile style micropayment model that everyone else on mobile does. You're messing up the order of things, today (2020-2021) it has been clear the mobile efforts are failing and they refocused on the Switch as it ended up doing super well in the pandemic, but back in 2019, they were looking to pivot. I thought I said that in the above comment but I guess I'll say it again.
- staticman2 6y agoNintendo was exploring other supplementary revenue sources but they never had plans to drop consoles. "Looking to pivot" is just what you are imaging they were doing.
- johnnyanmac 6y ago>, today (2020-2021) it has been clear the mobile efforts are failing and they refocused on the Switch as it ended up doing super well in the pandemic, but back in 2019, they were looking to pivot. even today, Nintendo's relatively few mobile games are making a lot of money: https://sensortower.com/blog/nintendo-revenue-one-billion https://sensortower.com/blog/nintendo-revenue-one-billion I don't know how that compares to consoles, but $1B in ~4 years of mobile games (which btw does NOT count Pokemon Go, I'm sure they get some kickback there) certainly isn't something they will pull out of soon. I don't think this is an either/or situation. Nintendo's Switch games make bank. their phone games make bank. Nintendo gets more money for more of both kinds of games.
